JOB DESCRIPTION 

POSITION TITLE: Counselor, VE K-12

DEPARTMENT: Counseling 

REPORTS TO: Elementary and Secondary VE Administrators

Job Goal: 

Classroom guidance, special education intake coordinator for building referrals, parent conferences, teacher consultations, community/school relations and awareness, crisis counseling, career counseling and referrals to outside agencies. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist w/ enrollment and placement K-12
  • Lead academic goal setting, scheduling, and planning.
  • Coordinate plans for students’ personal and social development, as well as career and college planning
  • Provide small group and individual guidance. 
  • Facilitate parent conferences/teacher consultation
  • Act as special education intake coordinator 
  • Assist w/ coordination of state and local test administration. 
  • Provide parenting education/community relations 
  • Direct crisis intervention/management 
  • Ensure career awareness/development 
  • Collaborate on new student induction/orientation
  • Provide community outreach/program referrals
  • Coordinate Edmond Family Services transmittal plans
  • Coordinate ELL documentation 
  • Coordinate building 504 paperwork and communication
  • Assist w/ parent orientation 
  • Ensure bullying prevention initiatives 
  • Initiate Healthy & Drug Free School efforts 
  • Provide for 5th grade transition orientation and HIV/AIDS education
  • As well as 7th grade HIV/AIDS education
  • 7th grade SOS
  • Participate in the implementation of selected curriculum and programs for school use in the areas of substance abuse, bullying and violence, and pro-social skills
  • Assist w/ staff/faculty in-services/training 
  • Assist school administrator in emergency referrals to DHS, Edmond Family Services and/or other state or community agencies, or private institutions
  • Consult with school counseling and teaching staff to determine student level of success in order to plan appropriate educational programming
  • Conduct home visits as needed with the support of the school staff to address academic and attendance problems

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: One hundred ninety two (192) contract days.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Site Principal in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policies and state law. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:None. 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:Masters degree in counseling or psychology. 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Oklahoma teaching certificate with counseling endorsement.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, staff, parents, and the general public. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to plan budgets and use the mathematical skills required to do so. Maintain accurate records and support documentation for projects under the supervision of the position. 

REASONABLE ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to use computer and computer related programs and other technologies needed to perform essential job functions. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to organize and chair or facilitate committees and meetings. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
