HEAD CUSTODIAN

JOB DESCRIPTION

Department: Custodial Services Length of Contract: 245 days per school year. Grade: 40, 50 or 60.

Immediate Supervisor: Custodial Management

Evaluated by: Custodial Management in collaboration with Site Administration.

Salary: Salary is dependent upon previous like experience according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Job Objective: Serve and maintain all buildings and grounds in a clean, safe, and professional manner in order to provide positive educational experiences.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Assistant Head Custodian and Custodians.

Work Environment: Inside Edmond Public School District facilities, outdoors during all types of weather and occasionally on roof tops and ledges. Custodians are in regular contact with students, the general public, and other EPS personnel.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education, General Aptitude, and Experience: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED), including basic math. Basic computer skills. Able to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Able to read and comprehend procedures and regulations. Able to organize and plan effectively. Preference is given to those with supervisory experience and up to 3 years custodial experience, floor care, and/or general maintenance.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to: stand or walk for long periods of time, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, climb, see, talk, and hear. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to: reach with hands and arms fully extended, lift and/or move up to 50 lbs, and work at heights up to 35 feet.

Evaluation and Training: This position is subject to evaluations and mandatory training.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Leadership: Direct team(s) toward custodial objectives and teach team all aspects of cleaning operations.

Cleaning: Floor care including: vacuum, buff, burnish, strip, and carpet care. Clean restrooms, empty trash, and other cleaning as assigned.

Security: Secures/unlocks buildings as needed. Monitors premises for inappropriate activity.

Grounds Maintenance: Mow, edge, weed-eat, pick up trash, and empty outside trash containers.

Bad Weather Duties: Remove snow and ice. Determine any facility damages and report findings. This position is considered to be one of “essential personnel” and will be expected to report to work on bad weather days.

Energy Management: Maintain and facilitate all aspects of the Energy Management program within the building.

Other Duties as Assigned: In order to adequately provide service, security, safety and quality to our students, staff and faculty, other duties may be assigned by supervisory staff.

HEAD CUSTODIAN

DESCRIPTION OF EVALUATION AREAS

  1. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  2. Cleaning and Maintenance: Able to perform and explain all cleaning procedures. Addresses cleaning and maintenance quality issues proactively. Contributes fair share of effort to the team's work. 
  3. Security: Secures/Opens facilities as needed. Helps monitor life safety equipment and alarm systems. Helps respond to security/ emergency calls. Monitors and reports inappropriate activity on premises. Contacts appropriate personnel as needed. 
  4. Grounds Maintenance: Ensures mowing, edging, and weed-eating is done in a timely manner. Ensures trash is picked up daily, and outside trash containers are emptied in a timely manner. Removes snow and ice as needed. 
  5. Supplies and Equipment: Exercises cost control. Maintains an adequate stock of supplies. Uses and maintains department equipment to highest standards. Reports any needs for maintenance and repair in a timely manner.
  6. Energy Management Helps maintain and facilitate all aspects of the Energy Management program within the building, including scheduled shutdowns. Helps Energy Management ensure prescribed conservation settings. 
  7. SAFETY COMPLIANCE
  8. Regulatory: Complies w/OSHA, Federal, State, and Local Policies, Procedures and Regulations. Attends and participates in mandatory training programs. Is able to teach and describe guidelines and procedures. Ensures Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is used. Is proactive in compliance.
  9. Departmental: Complies with District and Departmental Policies and Procedures. Maintains a safe environment. Workplace related injuries are documented within policy time frame. Follows instructional and warning labels on chemical containers. Ensures proper chemical mixing ratios and proper use of dispensing systems are followed. Submits facility safety reports and safety training reports in a timely manner.

  6. Planning Skills/Task Completion: Effectively prioritizes work assignments. Coordinates activities with other employees and outside groups. Helps control key access and distribution. Monitors employee time records for accuracy. Sets high standards of performance.
  7. Leadership and Team Commitment: Effectively trains and mentors team members. Management by Walking around (MBWA) conducting informal inspections to confirm departmental procedures are being followed including orderly custodial closets and carts. Clarifies roles, responsibilities, and team priorities. Adapts leadership style to fit the situation. Acknowledges team accomplishments and provides constructive feedback. Shows commitment to team/department objectives. 
  8. Information Technology: PC literate; has a working knowledge of Windows, data entry, electronic files and forms, and e-mail.
