Edgewood Center for Children and Families is Hiring an Upnight RN Near San Francisco, CA

NOTE: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has issued new requirements for health care and congregant care facilities to decrease the risk of COVID-19 outbreaks. Based on the CDPH public health mandate, all candidates for positions at Edgewood Center must provide proof of vaccination. Position-RN (Upnight)-this is a full-time position (30-40 hours a week)
with three to four 10-hour shifts per week 10pm-830am,on site at our Vicente campus.
Program Description
Edgewood's Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) provides youth and families with a safe, structured, child-friendly, and supportive place to address mental health needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The CSU was created in conjunction with the San Francisco Department of Public Health to evaluate and triage children and youth (ages 5-17) experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms or a mental health crisis.
Position Summary
The Registered Nurse works within a multidisciplinary team to evaluate, stabilize, and triage children, youth and families experiencing a mental health emergency. Responsibilities include conducting an initial assessment ensuring a client is medically cleared to be admitted, supporting medical and mental health support, administering medications, triaging incoming referrals, completing hospital transfers, collaborating with teams on discharge planning all within a fast-paced environment. The maximum nurse to patient ratio is 1 to 4.

  • Ability to 5585 clients after receiving training with CSU Director
  • Ability to coordinate and collaborate with a team of crisis evaluation and intervention professionals to rapidly assess client’s needs and make recommendations for placement.
  • Ability to assess response of children to behavioral and medical interventions
  • Documents all treatments and medical needs in appropriate logs, notes, etc.
  • Documents changes in medical and behavioral status in appropriate logs.
  • Ability to accurately and thoroughly communicate changes in client’s medical and behavioral status
  • Effectively communicates with CSU team
  • Responds to all medical emergencies
  • Case management and discharge planning skills.
  • Sensitive to the cultural diversity of employees and clients
  • Ability to communicate and generate reports both verbally and in writing for service integration, treatment team collaboration and service documentation according to programmatic and professional practice standards.
  • Use interpersonal communication skills to develop rapport and engage client and caregivers.
Essential Functions
  • Assess clients for signs and symptoms of behaviors indicating need for transfer to Emergency room.
  • Collaborates with CSU staff to provide Crisis Triage in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for contacting psychiatrist and or psychiatric nurse practitioner for medication orders, carrying them out and documenting on designated forms.
  • Efficiently and accurately prepares and administers all medications.
  • Advocates for Edgewood clients on health-related issues as needed.
  • Triage crisis cases within a multidisciplinary setting to include collaboration with many agencies such as police, fire, Child Crisis, CPS, HSA, local hospitals
  • Consults daily with Nursing Director, CSU Director, and Medical Doctor.
  • Follows specific CSU clinical policies and procedures.
  • Educate families, clients and other staff on health-related issues and medications as needed.
  • Collaborates with caregivers, medical professionals and others involved in client’s care to review client’s medication regimen at discharge.
  • Gathers collateral medical information such as lab results and vital signs from referring emergency departments, EMTs and police.
  • Initiates drug and pregnancy testing for clients when appropriate.
  • Coordinates transfer to psychiatric hospital when 5585 has been initiated including finding available beds and arranging transport.
  • Assess status of clients during and after physical restraints.
  • Attend interdisciplinary meetings.
  • As part of the crisis team- assess, evaluate, and monitor the safety of the client and others at all times.
  • Engage clients and caregivers as full partners in service planning, delivery, and evaluation.
  • Contribute to organization-wide quality management and improvement efforts by consistently providing the highest quality professional interventions, fulfilling all documentation requirements, and proactively seeking ways to enhance the quality of services and surpass minimum required standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Applied Knowledge, SKILLS, and Abilities
  • Current RN license in California, Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred
  • Current CPR certification
  • 1-2 years’ experience in child and adolescent psychiatry and/or crisis triage preferred
  • Excellent verbal, written and consultation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in working collaboratively with others in a professional setting.
  • Experience working with children, youth and families experiencing acute crisis that put the youth in jeopardy of being psychiatrically hospitalized preferred.
  • Experience working with at risk, disenfranchised and/or minority populations preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.
Salary Information
This position has an hourly base rate range of $52.25-$57.48 for language and up-night shift differentials.
