Job Family: Communications Specialist

Job Grade: Communications Associate I or II

Grade 6 or 21

Pay Range: $20-$37/hr.

SCOPE:

Performs a variety of Communication functions including overseeing the contributions, public affairs and corporate membership programs and coordinates business development advertising. Performs special assignments as assigned.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to and receives operational and functional guidance from the Manager of Communications and Community Programs.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews requests for financial and other contribution support and determines appropriate approval authority level.
  • Administers the contributions programs and prepares annual budgets and presentations on the programs.
  • Maintains records and reports of political contributions and expenditures prescribed bylaw.
  • Advises management of policy guidelines regarding memberships and contributions.
  • Researches and writes special reports and presentations such as operating plans.
  • Directs the activities of assigned staff.
  • Assigns and reviews work, initiates personnel actions, and evaluates performance.

Job Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the UCOR organization to effectively respond to media inquiries.
  • Knowledge of UCOR policies and procedures.
  • Strong oral and written communication.
  • Extensive knowledge in journalistic writing techniques and skill in editing articles and stories.
  • Familiarity with news media processes and experience in media relations.
  • Experience in developing and administering Public Relations programs and employee communication activities.
  • Knowledge of UCOR policies on memberships and contributions.
  • Knowledge of UCOR organization and a broad knowledge of Communications ‘functions as they are applied to UCOR.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws regarding political and charitable contributions and use of foundation funds.
  • Proficiency and experience in maintaining accurate records of budget and statistical information.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field or demonstrated equivalent.

Experience: 0 to 5 years’ experience.

Level-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Writes articles and news stories and selects photographs for UCOR publications.
  • Conducts interviews with both external and internal sources to UCOR.
  • Independently responds to routine media inquiries.
  • With supervisor approval, researches issues and responds to more complex media inquiries or initiates media contact.
  • Plans and organizes publicity or writes stories for the UCOR organization, community events or promotional activities at jobsites, and coordinates media activities with area office Communications staff.
  • Identifies and develops potential stories about UCOR activities for placement in media.
  • Reviews legislative bills and public relations publications for Items of interest.
  • For supervisor review, drafts articles for UCOR publications on politically related measures and Items.
