EDF Renewables North America is Hiring a Director, Project Engineering [Hybrid] Near San Diego, CA

Scope of Position

EDF Renewables North America (EDFR) is a market-leading independent power producer and service provider with over 35 years of experience. We deliver grid-scale power: wind (onshore and offshore), solar photovoltaic, and storage projects; distribution-scale power: solar and storage; asset optimization: technical, operational, and commercial expertise to maximize the performance of generating projects, and onsite solutions, through the Company’s PowerFlex affiliate, offering a full suite of onsite energy solutions for commercial and industrial customers: solar, storage, EV charging, energy management systems, and microgrids.

The Director of Project Engineering is responsible for managing all project engineering support to the North American Development and Implementation Teams. The position includes oversight of the design of structures, roads, foundations, interconnection, substations, collector systems, SCADA, and other project site facilities, as well as any other engineering related activities. 

Responsibilities

Team Management, Operational Performance, and Strategy 

  • Direct, manage, and mentor the team. Prioritize tasks to align with business needs. Provide oversight for the day-to-day activities of the team and provide guidance and strategic direction. 
  • Ensure the team functions within the team developed goals, initiatives, objectives, priorities, continuous improvement plans, and align with broader EDFR objectives. 
  • Responsible to evaluate and define the proper tools, procedures and processes to ensure maximum accuracy and efficiency. Ensure code compliance and industry best practices within EDFR designs. 
  • Interface with technical and engineering teams globally. 
  • Leads a team of Project Engineering Managers (PEMs) responsible for: 
  • Coordinating engineering for development projects, including but not limited to: preliminary engineering studies (hydro, topo, geotech, interconnection etc.), preliminary engineering design, coordination with SEG/RAG, coordination with Utility, ISO, and off-taker on engineering deliverables, etc. 
  • Coordinating engineering for projects in implementation, including but not limited to: providing 10% design, managing project design cycle (30%, 60%, IFP and IFC designs), and supporting Construction Manager, once projects are in construction stage. 
  • Leads team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) responsible for: 
  • Maintaining project engineering specifications (roads, structures, foundations, collector, power system studies, substation T-line, etc.) 
  • Serving as Owner’s Engineer in electrical, civil, structural, SCADA and process engineering; reviewing 30%, 60%, IFP and IFC designs, answering engineering RFIs, reviewing engineering submittals and transmittals. Following through SCADA point-to- point testing until project handover to AO. 
  • Qualifying transformer (main power and padmount transformers) and cable suppliers, performing factory audits, transformer and cable design reviews and witnessing FATs. Supporting procurement efforts. 
  • Leading or supporting qualification and procurement of other major components including trackers, inverters, WTGs, PV modules and BESS. 

Technical Support  

  • Engages external consultants / industry experts when specific skills (not available within the department) are needed or during increased workloads. 
  • Coordinate successful collaboration with other teams including SSEG, Construction and preconstruction, Procurement, Project Management, Product Development, PRE, etc. 
  • Support the EPC RFP process. 
  • Supports Chief Engineer in reducing technical risk and achieving planned objectives critical to the company, cross-functional process improvement and formal technical reviews and approval for high-risk engineering projects/products. 
  • Provide technical expertise, solutions to problems, and recommendations for projects. 
  • Seek opportunities to improve the total cost of ownership for EDF R power plants through design, equipment, standards, methods, and/or operations. 

Other duties as assigned  

Supervision of Others: 10 Direct Reports 

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical engineering. Masters Degree preferred. 
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant industry experience with minimum of 7 years in large scale renewable energy projects.
  • Experience with Wind, PV and BESS grid scale projects. Experience with Hydrogen projects is a plus. 
  • Successful track record in managing several projects from implementation, throughout construction until COD. 
  • Requires diversified knowledge of relevant codes (e.g. IEEE, UL, NFPA, IEC), standards and engineering principles.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, with emphasis on Excel and MS Project 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal communication and management skills.
  • Must possess the desire and capability to constantly learn and digest advanced concepts in engineering, programming, and mathematics, be able to work well with cross-functional teams, a strong desire for problem solving and deriving engineering solutions independently, have proven organizational skills with the ability to handle and lead multiple concurrent projects, track progress, and provide updates as necessary.
  • Ability to perform quantitative and qualitative analysis. 
  • Successfully work with contractors, vendors, and consultants. 

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift 50lbs.

Working Conditions:

Approximately 80% of time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of various Microsoft software/programs), phones, and general office equipment. Approximately 20% of time is spent outside of the office visiting vendors’ and/or sites in addition to attending various conferences and meetings.

This role’s annual base salary range is between $144,525 and $240,875.
