ECU Health North Hospital is a Joint Commission-accredited, 204-bed acute bed facility serving Halifax, Northampton and Warren counties in the north-central region of North Carolina. Its service area also reaches into southern Virginia. With more than 600 team members, the hospital offers a broad range of medical and surgical services. It features a 24-hour emergency department and offers advanced diagnostics as well as specialty and primary care.

Position Summary

CNI (Clinical Nurse Instructor) provides clinical teaching and unit orientation for all assigned nursing staff/students. The CNI has a role in the provision of hospital orientation, mandatory programs, nursing in-services and special events as needed across for ECU Health North by providing staff development expertise as an educator, Instructor, facilitator, change agent, and leader. The CNI supports the development of the bedside nurse/student and fosters empowerment through knowledge to achieve excellence through the delivery of evidenced based nursing practice. This occurs through the facilitation of the educational process through assessment, development, planning, implementation and evaluation of competency assessment, and continuing education. In addition, as a role model of professional behavior, the CNI is instrumental in creating a professional nursing climate within ECU Health North to meet the needs of the diverse units within ECU Health North.
Must be able to withstand physical activity which includes the ability to move or lift at least 50 pounds. Travel may be required to facilitate collaboration with entities across ECU Health.
The CNI will also serve as an Adjunct Nursing Instructor in Association with Halifax Community College and others as deemed appropriate.

Responsibilities

  • Assists learners in the assessment of needs and identification of outcomes.
  • Incorporates principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education programs.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff to the organization as needed/available.
  • Develops/coordinates education plans related to initial and ongoing competency validation of assigned students.
  • Plans, prepares, and maintains materials for use in educational programs for accuracy and relevance to the target audience.
  • Identifies and evaluates instructional materials in all types of media and formats.
  • Adjusts content and teaching strategies appropriate to the learner needs.
  • Delivers competence-based programs for nursing staff with a focus upon improvement of skills and retention of knowledge.
  • Develops evidence-based educational materials.
  • Supports student/staff development with educational activities (which include remediation, certification, mentoring, life support, JCAHO requirements, product rollouts, etc.) as needed.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of educational programming.
  • Teaches content as needed and/or assigned within clinical expertise to facilitate orientation, staff development and/or safe practice.
  • The Instructor will have oversight of assigned Students and be responsible for their clinical education during assigned clinical days. The Instructor will also be responsible for any required documentation of clinical experiences for the College as well as ECU Health.
  • Serves as an educational consultant to ECU Health North and assigned facilities, task forces, committees, and projects relating to policy, procedure and program development.
  • Attends Advisory meetings for Halifax Community College and others as assigned.
  • Responds to regulatory mandates for research and management of sentinel events.
  • Identifies and responds to needs of ECU Health North to promote quality patient care and safety consults with staff regarding learning needs.
  • Participates in other necessary duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • BSN and Current North Carolina RN license required.
  • Minimum five years of health care experience. Hospital experience required.
  • Must complete the Nursing Clinical Instructor Partner (CIP) Program [part of the NC AHEC Nursing Clinical Partnership Project]
  • Must also be an adjunct Halifax Community College employee and meet the minimum requirements of the instructor role for Halifax Community College
  • AHA BLS Certified
  • Position is a fulltime position of 40 hours whereas the Clinical time will be 8 hours plus 4 hours for paperwork for clinical days; remainder of time will be as assigned by the Director of Education/VP, Patient Care Services


Preferred Requirements

  • Two years experience teaching adults preferred.
  • Experience teaching/supervising nursing aides and other licensed nurses preferred.
  • EHR EPIC experience preferred.
