Salary Range: $23.06 to $33.59 hourly

Position Description:

Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated Teacher Assistant to join our team of dedicated faculty members for the 2024-25 school year. The position is available starting August 2022. At Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley, Teachers and Teacher Assistants work together to build warm, respectful and supportive relationships with children and to cultivate a safe and stimulating learning environment.

The Teacher Assistant works in close cooperation with and under the guidance of the homeroom teacher. The Teacher’s Assistant supports both the English and the French Curriculum teachers in conducting the student’s program in a manner that is in keeping with both the highest standards of professional competence and ethics, and with EB’s mission and values. This position reports to the Head of Primary.

The TA is responsible for providing support with educational lessons and activities to teachers. This position will assist with the preparation of classroom materials and/or displays for lessons planned and executed by the teacher. The TA will help with clerical duties, enforce classroom rules and provide general care and supervision to EB children enrolled in Preschool & Kindergarten classes.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Participate in all classroom activities, lead and monitor small or large group activities with groups of children as determined by the homeroom teacher.
  • Provide support in classroom preparation, maintain cleanliness and assist in the implementation of class lessons, activities, and special events as instructed by the homeroom teacher and/or the pedagogical team.
  • Help maintain the flow of classroom activities by organizing and preparing supplies and materials for student use.
  • Supervise the class or group independently when the homeroom teacher is not present and carries out class activities as directed by the homeroom teacher in his/her absence.
  • Develop and maintain an awareness of students’ needs, class rules, class procedures and instructional materials in order to anticipate and respond appropriately
  • Practices constructive discipline techniques in and outside of the classroom that model and encourage respectful peer interactions in order to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment
  • Assist both teachers in establishing and communicating appropriate expectations/rules/procedures with students and enforcing them with consistency and fairness.
  • Supports constructive faculty and staff relations through problem solving, flexibility and communication.
  • Enhances a feeling of trust about the school by fostering a respectful, cordial and professional relationship with parents and EB employees.
  • Integrate Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice practices that are developmentally appropriate, to encourage kindness and empathy within our classrooms and school community.
  • May be asked to attend Parent/Teacher conferences at the request of the homeroom teacher.
  • Supervise students and assist with morning arrival, dismissal, lunch, carpool and recess supervisory duties as assigned.
  • Understand and adhere to all school safety protocols– (e.g. read and follow the EB Faculty Handbook)
  • Participate in weekly Wednesday staff meetings, In-Service Days and other mandatory meetings.
  • Participate actively in professional development opportunities and reflective practices offered by the school to ensure continual professional growth and development.

Qualifications and desired personal qualities:

  • A 2-year degree with teaching qualification or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
  • A minimum of 12 units of early childhood education
  • Strong desire and ability to work with young children
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • Flexibility and willingness to adapt to different schedules and teaching styles and expectations.
  • A good command of computer skills and proficiency with relevant technology
  • Ability to complete CPR/1st aid and other safety trainings as required by the school
  • Ability to lift and/or support a young child of 3-6 years old (up to 50 lbs) when necessary to ensure child safety.
  • A commitment to a diverse, equitable and inclusive environment
  • Demonstrated ability to think resourcefully and creatively
  • Ability to treat sensitive information with a high degree of confidentiality
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Fluency in French required
  • Bilingual French/English a must

The salary range for this position is $23.06 to $33.59 per hour depending on experience.
