Echo is Hiring an Appropriate Technology Assistant Near North Fort Myers, FL

SUMMARY: To assist the Appropriate Technology Manager in implementing tasks necessary for the function and integration of appropriate technology (AT) on ECHO North America’s Small Farm Resource Center (SFRC) in North Fort Myers, FL. The SFRC serves to support ECHO’s domestic and overseas network, is an educational resource, and connects the public to ECHO’s mission. This position focuses on day-to-day AT operations, requiring a strong labor component and cross-training with the Global Farm Manager, Seed Bank Manager, and Propagation Manager.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Support AT operations (80%)
    1. Provide assistance in Appropriate Technology with tasks including, but not limited to:
      • Improve, maintain and repair AT demonstrations throughout the SFRC
      • Maintain general organization and tidiness in the AT work area
      • Perform periodic maintenance of landscape areas and tour path
      • Research, test, and evaluate new technologies
      • Produce AT related products when necessary (bamboo, bricks, biochar, bioliquid fertilizer, etc.)
      • Train and support staff and interns using AT
    2. Operate farm equipment (skid steer, tractors, chainsaws and mowers) as necessary to support the projects and activities of the AT Manager
    3. Apply pesticides under the guidance and oversight of the AT Manager in accordance with EPA worker protection standards for safe pesticide application in AT areas.
    4. Cross-train with the AT Manager on key responsibilities and tasks and manage and supervise volunteers and interns in the absence of the AT Manager.
    5. Additional duties as required by the AT Manager.
  2. Independent Project (10%)
    1. Design and execute an independent project that supports the AT department.
  3. Devotions and Meetings (10%)
  4. This position works in tandem with the Propagation Assistant to cover chores in the event of absence. The AT Assistant is expected to cover chores (greenhouse/presale irrigation, freeze/frost protection) for the Propagation Assistant in the event of their absence. Propagation and AT assistants will communicate so that scheduled vacations do not overlap.
QUALIFICATIONS:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability needed.
  1. College degree (preferably in an agricultural or engineering related field) or equivalent life experience working with agriculture or appropriate technologies.
  2. Prior farm, AT, and overseas experience helpful.
  3. Prior construction, mechanics, and shop skills helpful
  4. Must be comfortable working with, training, and managing volunteers.
  5. Must be willing to work with others to accomplish tasks.
  6. Adequate verbal skills
  7. Possess character traits consistent with ECHO core values.
  8. Must subscribe to the ECHO Statement of Faith.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
  1. Close collaboration with the AT Manager
  2. Positions directly supervised: Volunteers
  3. Positions indirectly supervised: Interns
WORK ENVIRONMENT:The work environment is mostly outdoors under varying conditions for extended periods of time; however, there are times when work is conducted in an office setting.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must regularly work outdoors and, may at times, assist Ag staff with entering data and other tasks that involve writing or work on the computer. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand (for at least two consecutive hours); walk; use hands, talk and hear. Fine motor skills such as typing, the use of a computer mouse and telephone handset are required. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms and use ladders. The employee is required to sit, stoop, kneel, and crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, flexible as to start and end times. On-campus housing may be provided with the understanding that weekend (and occasional evening) work is a necessary part of the job at times.TRAVEL:Travel is primarily local during the business day.
