Description
The four mission components guide the development of curriculum as well as the evolution of the EPS culture. Founded in 2002, Eastside Prep was re-accredited by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools (NWAIS) in January 2019. Eastside Prep has grown from 17 students in 2003-2004 to a total of 540 students for the 2024-2025 academic year.
Position Summary : The professional school nurse directs a school health services program to best meet the needs of the student population of Eastside Preparatory School (EPS). Reporting to the Director of Student Well-Being, the nurse is responsible for reviewing and updating school health policies, maintaining student health and vaccination records, organizing, and coordinating school health services in the areas of student assessment, intervention, health counseling and health education, and serves as liaison with private physicians and community agencies. This is a 12-month position with the possibility of working remotely when students are not on campus. The position could be 3 days/week or 5 days/week.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Nursing Services
  1. Provide direct care using professional assessment skills, the nursing process, individual health care plans (IHPs), and established health protocols.
  2. Administer first aid, authorized health treatments, and CPR/AED in accordance with established procedures to students, staff, and persons on school grounds.
  3. Assess student problems, communicate with parents regarding individual students, and ensure appropriate referrals and follow up as needed. Serve as liaison between school personnel, the family, healthcare professionals, and the community.
  4. Notify parents of accident or illness. Secure emergency medical care for students as needed.
  5. Maintain security of all medications. Ensure safe handling, administration, and documentation of all medications given in accordance with established EPS policies and procedures.
  6. Serve as health advocate for students.
Instruction
  1. Educate faculty and staff through in-service programs on health-related topics.
  2. Provide health education to individual students and families.
  3. Participate in classroom education as determined by administration, staff, and school nurse.
Consultation
  1. Collaborate closely with administration and staff and provide leadership to ensure a healthy school environment. Work to meet the health needs of the general school population and those students with identified health conditions.
  2. Participate in collaborative meetings regarding students with identified health needs and develop Individual Health Plans (IHPs).
  3. Advise school administration in crisis or emergency situations and participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
Administration
  1. Responsible for the establishment, review, and implementation of school health services, policies and procedures. Policies and procedures are reviewed annually, and changes made as needed.
  2. Assurethat such policies and related procedures adhere to applicable legal and regulatory requirements and ethical standards.
  3. Serveas interpreter of health mandates, recommendations, and trends.
  4. Reviewand updateall standard forms for the school health program.
  5. Compile, maintainand fileall reports, records and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate and confidential student health records such as immunization records, medication administration records, individual student treatment records, and IHPs.
  6. Coordinatethe establishmentsof guidelines, procedures, and in-service training of school personnel on health issues including CPR and AED training and delegated procedures.
  7. Developemergency action plans for students at risk of medical crises at school or during a school function.
  8. Providetraining for staff regarding chronic illnesses experienced by students who may require assessment and adaptation of the health-related learning environment.
  9. CompleteUnusual Occurrence / Accident Report Forms when required.
  10. Implementcommunicable disease control in the school, including monitoring, surveillance and participating in disease prevention and outbreak management within the school.
  11. Requisitionsupplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
  12. Reportpotential health and safety hazards to administration.
Professional Development
  1. Maintainprofessional nursing skills and knowledge as required by the Washington Nurse Practice Act and the Washington State Board of Nursing.
  2. Attend educational programs, seminars, workshops and other professional growth activities to maintain and update professional knowledge, expertise, and clinical skills.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard medical clinic equipment including automated external defibrillator (AED); standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
Posture: Frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing, pulling, and twisting
Lifting: Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and assisting of non-ambulatory students
Environment: Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; occasionally required to work outside and may be exposed to gases, fumes, and sprays, etc.
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
Valid registered nurse license (RN) from the Washington State Board of Nursing
Current automatic external defibrillator (AED) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certified
Current First Aid Certification
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Principles and practices underlying professional nursing
Ability to implement policies and procedures
Ability to remain calm in crisis or emergency situations
Ability to deal compassionately with a variety of students in grades 5 through 12
Ability to communicate appropriately, collaboratively, and effectively with students, parents, administrators, other school personnel, health care providers and community agencies
Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Compensation
Salary range is $75,000-$91,000 (for full-time 5 days per week) and will mirror your experience.
