East-West Center is Hiring a Senior Leadership Education & Development Specialist Near Honolulu, HI

SUMMARY: The East-West Center (EWC) promotes better relations and understanding among the people and nations of the United States, Asia, and the Pacific through cooperative study, research, and dialogue. Established by the U.S. Congress in 1960, the Center serves as a resource for information and analysis on critical issues of common concern, bringing people together to exchange views, build expertise, and develop policy options. Over the last 50 years, the Center's Leadership Program has cultivated leaders from diverse fields across the region by linking high-level content with experiential learning and emphasizing practical application of ideas, fulfilling its vision to convene, develop, and equip a network of leaders to solve challenges of common concern.

Our Professional Development team is seeking an on-site Senior Leadership Education & Development Specialist for a limited, two-year appointment (with possibility of extension). This position collaborates with various teams across the Center to (a) plan, organize, and facilitate existing East-West Center leadership, education, and professional development programs and ensure they are relevant to the Asia-Pacific region, (b) develop new programs and initiatives that anticipate and respond to the region’s critical issues and trends, and (c) support partnership-development and fundraising efforts.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Supports and Strengthens Existing Programs (50%)

  • Manages, plans, organizes, and facilitates existing East-West Center Leadership programs – including in-person, virtual, and blended programs. Responsibilities extend to working collaboratively with the program team to ensure high-quality programming, managing program-specific teams for program delivery, and directing and coaching fellows.
  • Develops, maintains, and updates existing program content and flow to respond to the needs of the region and the cohort and to ensure contextually aware and sensitive leadership education and professional development.

Ensures Quality Programming and Continuous Learning (20%)

  • Monitors and evaluates program performance with methods that enable comparisons across programs and that capture data used to improve programs, measures participant learning, and broadly shares program outputs and outcomes across a variety of mediums.
  • Conducts regional scanning and analysis with respect to emerging leadership issues, opportunities, and challenges in the region for curriculum development and to provide recommendations about the direction of Leadership Program activities.
  • Serves as a presenter and resource on leadership for other East-West Center programs.

Collaborates in the Development and Growth of New Programs, Partnerships, and Funding (30%)

  • Identifies new initiatives and opportunities for growing the unit’s program catalog with local and regional partners, including universities and non-governmental organizations, and EWC alumni. Ensures new programs connect with emerging and critical regional issues and trends (e.g. future of work, inclusive and equitable leadership.)
  • Coordinates with other East-West Center departments in the development and administration of new funding initiatives and programs.
  • Collaborates with the Office of Alumni Engagement and EWC alumni to build and expand alumni offerings.
  • Networks with organizations, groups, professionals, and practitioners across the Asia-Pacific region that are defining the near, mid- and long-term futures in the regions.

SUPERVISION: The incumbent works independently but receives general direction from the Leadership Program Senior Manager. Assignments are made in terms of broad goals and deliverables and work may be reviewed for fulfillment of objectives and conformance with departmental policy and practice. The incumbent demonstrates a high degree of autonomous judgment, discretion, and resourcefulness in resolving complex and/or intricate issues and problems and resolves them in a timely and efficient manner.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education & ExperiencePossesses a master’s degree and at least four (4) years of program facilitation or teaching experience in leadership or professional development in Asia-Pacific contexts (in the region and/or with participants from the region). Work experience should demonstrate a skilled capacity to design, deliver, monitor, and evaluate leadership and professional development programs; and possess appropriate cultural competencies with individuals and groups from the United States and the Asia-Pacific, as well as mixed groups with diverse representations and social identities.

Communication – Strong written and verbal communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with people of diverse backgrounds and abilities in person, on the phone and in digital environments.

Knowledge - Of office practices and procedures; of correct English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and word usage; and of office machines and equipment; proficiency in computer programs (such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat Professional and other equivalent applications). Knowledge of online teaching and collaboration platforms using various virtual meeting programs (e.g. Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams). Possesses a robust professional network within the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in leadership and professional development.

Physical Requirements – Able to sit, walk or stand for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, operate standard office equipment, and use a phone; see and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without vision aids; read and understand rules and policies, labels, and instructions; and to hear, speak and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone.

Work Schedule & Travel – Normal work is conducted from Monday-Friday during normal business hours, but some weekends and evenings may be required when residential programs are in session. The incumbent must also be able and available for occasional in-state, national, and international travel to support program needs (up to 30%).
