Assistive Technology Instructor 1
The purpose of the East Texas Lighthouse for the Blind shall be the rehabilitation, education, training and employment of people who are blind or visually impaired and the furtherance of their interests and welfare through programs designed to provide rehabilitation, training and employment opportunities, being wholly charitable and benevolent.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Assistive Technology Instructor is responsible for the successful training of all AT clients, identifying and evaluating new AT tools for ETLB, and partnering with all other areas to identify and facilitate new offerings as needed. Receiving referrals from the Client Services Case Manager, the AT Instructor performs all duties relevant to clients and employees accomplishing their AT goals including but not limited to assessments, guidance, planning, training, overall case management, and follow up.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- A Bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation, Education, or related field, or four years of successful employment in the field of Assistive Technology
- JAWS, Zoomtext, and Outlook/Word Core certified
- State Certified, Level 1
- Teaching experience required.
- Teaching experience of the blind and visually impaired in a rehabilitation setting is preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Evaluates clients’ needs for and makes recommendations on the use of assistive technology in the following areas: education, home management, employment, travel, leisure.
- Instructs clients on variety of assistive technology including but not limited to audio, visual, Braille and cellular devices.
- Keeps current on cutting edge technology for the blind and visually impaired.
- Maintains accurate, timely documentation in client management system.
- Prepares regular or special reports as requested by manager.
- Maintains frequent communication with AT clients to monitor progress.
- Prepares and maintains lesson plans/check lists throughout training periods with clients.
- Continually updates manual and procedures as directed.
- Creates and assigns homework as appropriate.
- Embosses braille material for others as needed.
- Accessibility tester as needed.
- Serves as co-instructor when needed.
- ACVREP Certified within 5 years of hire date.
- Preforms other duties as assigned

- Strong computer, MOS and assistive technology skills, including speech, large print, Braille, note taking devices, cellular, and smart devices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Individual must be able to sit for long periods of time, reach, stoop, and lift/hold common AT devices.
