BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Provides management and leadership for the Echo Lab. Mentors new and existing staff. Performs Echo Tech duties when necessary.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Supervisory Responsibilities: YES

Minimum Education: Associates Required; Bachelors degree preferred.

Degree: Degree preferred in the field of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences. Successful completion of Ultrasound or Cardiovascular Technology Program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAAHEP) or the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) which includes verified didactic and supervised clinical experience in Echocardiography.

License/Certification Required: BLS required. PALS preferred. Registered or registry eligible form the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Minimum Work Experience: 5 years echo experience required, pediatric experience preferred

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

* Advanced knowledge in the field of pediatric echocardiography.

* Ability to supervise, evaluate, and critique the operation and performance of staff sonographers to ensure quality patient care.

* Excellent organizational and time management skills.

* Excellent communication, managerial, and leadership abilities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Performs all phases of echocardiography, including fetal echos with accuracy, precision, and according to established processes/procedures. Correctly operates all equipment in assigned area, ensuring that safety procedures are followed at all times.

* Maintains work area and equipment: Ensures work area is kept clean, according to safety codes and departmental standards. Checks equipment daily to ensure in working order, including calibrations, sterilization, and other equipment related duties. Accurately reports any equipment malfunction and/or maintenance needed immediately.

* Maintains working knowledge and consistently follows Medio-Legal Technical Ethics, Rules, and Regulations. Maintains cardiology management system, insures images are accessible and makes recommendation to appropriate personnel when issues arise. Assists in QC/QA projects, as assigned in order to ensure continued advancement of the Echo Lab services. Maintains up-to-date operational manuals to ensure safe and consistent provision of care/testing.

* Maintains current technical expertise with all Echo Lab equipment and image archiving. Actively participates in "call" system. Assumes on-call when appropriate to area of responsibility.

* Works to improve and/or maintain the quality of services provided: Coordinates technical activities involved in the installation, operation and maintenance of machines and related equipment in the Pediatric Echo Lab. Performs daily maintenance of the departments cardiology PACS. Compiles and prepares reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and appropriate recommendations or conclusions regarding Echo department.

* Collaborates with other departments and staff in a proactive, professional, and courteous manner. Works to maintain positive interdepartmental relationships throughout the facility.

* Participates in the professional education of co-workers, establishes goals and helps staff in achieving those goals.

* Provides leadership, supervision and guidance to the department, participates in one-on-one and group meetings with Echo staff to assist in communication and staff development.

* As assigned by Director, establishes, maintains, interprets, and evaluates Echo Lab policies and procedures to ensure that optimal patient care is given: Accurately communicates these policies to staff and holds them accountable. Recommends new policies and procedures or revision of existing ones as needed.

* Monitors staff performance consistently and fairly to ensure staff is meeting standards for performance reviews as described within the job description. And initiates timely corrective action and follow up if necessary.

* Maintains appropriate staffing levels to ensure optimal coverage and cost-effectiveness and to provide continuous, care for all patients.

* Actively encourages staff development and growth: Assists staff in identifying opportunities to obtain CEU's, as required by the state. Provides accurate CEU records for state and TJC inspections.

* Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter-and intra-departmentally to facilitate the department's/unit's ability to meet its goals and objectives.

* Willingly accepts any other assignment that may be requested.

* Assists in operational budget planning by providing feedback to Director on Echo Lab's personnel and equipment needs.

* Recommends ways to reduce expenditures and enhance revenues without compromising the quality of services.

* Utilizes hospital resources and time respectfully and accountably.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

* Light lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 10-20 lbs occasionally and frequent moving of objects of less than 10 lbs is required. Frequent sitting with some walking, standing, squatting, bending and reaching is required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
