Job posting for: Lifeguard and Waterfront Specialist

Location: Camp Bovey Residential Summer Camp in Gordon, WI

Reports to: Camp Director

Status: Seasonal, July 8-27, 2024, 10-20 hrs/week

Position Purpose:

Provide supervision and ensure a safe environment for the camp’s waterfront activities, including swimming. Assist with the physical operation of the waterfront facilities and equipment.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Supervise and guard all waterfront activities
  • Provide supervision during aquatic activities to help prevent and manage injuries.
  • Evaluate aquatics abilities of campers and staff.
  • Provide water rescues as needed.
  • Utilize first aid and CPR and other emergency management services as needed.
  • Ability to observe camper and staff water activity, assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations and emergency procedures and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
  • Partner with camp staff to respond to changes in weather conditions affecting the waterfront.
  • Assist camp staff in program areas such as swimming and canoeing
    • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures while in their program activity.
    • Assist in the delivery and supervision of all water activities and special events at the waterfront.
  • Assist with the care of the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area
    • Conduct daily check of area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Clean waterfront area daily, keeping it free of hazards and debris.

Other Job Duties:

  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned.
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise relevant programs.
    • Assist in the planning of any special events on or near the waterfront.

Qualifications:

  • Current certification in lifeguard training or equivalent.
  • Current certification in first aid and CPR.
  • Prior experience with lakefront lifeguarding preferred.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors in the water.
  • Training and experience assessing swimming skills and monitoring boat safety preferred.

Physical Aspects of the Position:

  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with participants (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental cues and hazards near waterfront.
  • Physical ability to respond to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
  • Physical endurance, including ability to run, swim and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate waterfront equipment and waterfront activities.
  • Ability to operate with daily exposure to the sun/heat and varying water conditions.

Compensation and Benefits: $15-18/hour DOQ, 10-20 hrs per week
