Overview

Are you someone seeking a career path in management?

The Supplier Quality Engineer works closely with suppliers and the purchasing group to focus on delivering quality products in the industry. This position is responsible for strategic quality systems, investigating, analyzing and correcting problems in quality, production and control at supplier locations as well as performing audits and implementing new strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Development strategy, designing the metrics for the function and supplier performance
  • Carry out supplier validation and process audits
  • Work with Engineering (Design and Manufacturing Engineers) team to define process parameters and criteria to ensure supplier process capability is effective to meet product and process requirements
  • Support Purchasing with the supplier approval process by assessing manufacturing/technology capabilities and Health, Safety and Environmental risks
  • Support new product launches to ensure suppliers are capable of delivering the required quality standards
  • Investigate the root cause analysis and corrective actions process of supplier quality issues
  • Perform on-site supplier visits for root cause analysis and verification of corrective actions of supplier quality issues
  • Review and evaluate supplier quality data to identify process improvement opportunities within the supply chain
  • Where appropriate work with the supplier directly, create corrective action plans to address process failures
  • Review supplier manufacturing processes, collaborate with suppliers on process improvement and value enhancement opportunities
  • Promote the use of customer preferred techniques for continuous improvement such as Lean, Six-Sigma, Poka-Yoke (Error Proofing), Measurement System Analysis and FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis)
  • Monitor and report on supplier product quality and performance understanding any commercial issues and impacts
  • Report on Supplier Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Monitor customer PPM (Parts per Million), supplier PPM, supplier problem solving on time, cost recovery and supplier warranty indicators
  • Ensure compliance and assist with adherence to the Quality Management System (IATF16949/ISO9001)
  • Stay current and up to date on any changes that may affect the supply and demand of needed products and materials and advise others of any impact
  • Keep up with current and developing manufacturing and engineering trends that concern product quality
  • Monitor changes that may affect the supply and demand of needed products and materials and advise others of any impact
  • Verifying implementation and effectiveness of supplier correction actions.
  • Undertake personal continuous training and development
  • Ensure that the function operates in accordance with any health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors
  • Review, implement and update company records ex. training matrices, performance reviews, risk assessments
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance
  • Work collaboratively, negotiate and engage with key stakeholders to facilitate delivery and compliance with the purchasing strategy
  • Assist in management of the supplier approval process by assessing financial, manufacturing/technology capabilities and Health, Safety and Environmental risks

Qualifications

Experience & Qualifications

  • 5 years of experience in quality engineering role with emphasis on supplier development and quality assurance
  • Membership of an appropriate professional body
  • Significant experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment, preferably automotive

Education/Certification

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering field, preferred; equivalent level of education, training and experience may be considered

Skills & Competencies

Required:

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, material specifications, pricing indices, etc.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess and resolve issues or escalate appropriately for resolution
  • Ability to analyze problems and formulate alternative/creative solutions to problems
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills; a team player with proven ability to work across functional areas and all levels of the organization
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and delegate (when appropriate) to manage time efficiently and to meet deadlines
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced and, at times, stressful environment
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
