Job Title: Literacy Instructional Fellow, Summer Cultural Enrichment Program (SCEP)

SUMMARY

EOYDC’s mission is to nurture the holistic development of youth from kindergarten into adulthood so that they can live a life of prosperity, integrity, and purpose.

EOYDC’s Summer Cultural Enrichment Program (SCEP) serves students grades K-5. As the earliest part of our Education Continuum, our K-8 programming emphasizes exploration of, and exposure to, ideas and information for our elementary school students, as well as increasing the level of critical thinking, awareness, and understanding of our middle school students.

SCEP Instructional Fellows are leadership roles that provide aspiring educators an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills and gain more experience serving youth. This fellowship is designed for fellows to learn best practices for working with and instructing designated age-groups. Further, this program helps fellows establish their career plans post-fellowship, while also gaining the experience and skill sets required to be successful in future direct-service opportunities with young people. Ultimately, the goal of this program is to provide young adults who are heavily considering a career in ECE, elementary school teaching, and/or youth development to gain the skills and experience needed to be attractive to future employers in the education/youth-serving sector.

Participants of this fellowship can expect to learn the following:

● Literacy instruction for K-5 students

● Culturally-sustaining/asset-based pedagogical approaches

● Trauma-informed, healing-centered

● Cognitive development

● Curriculum development and lesson planning

● Classroom management

● Efficient supply prep and ordering processes

Additionally, Instructional Fellows are in charge of creating a six-week curriculum for their designated class. This curriculum, and the lesson plans contained within it, will be developed based on training. Class material should vary based on the age group. Furthermore, we expect Instructional Fellows to provide guidance in meetings to help the growth of the overall program and provide guidance to interns supporting their classes. Instructional Fellows are also responsible for setting the tone for much of the kids’ experience in the program, so setting a positive example is of the utmost importance.To provide opportunities for future educators at varying levels of experience, this fellowship will offer two different levels of fellowship:

● Junior Fellows
○ These fellows have had at least one (1) year of experience working directly

with young people in a formal setting prior to this fellowship

  • ○ Junior Fellows will co-instruct classes in pairs
  • ○ These fellows will likely be high school seniors and/or first year collegestudents, but former experience, training, etc. will also be key determiningfactors

● Senior Fellows

  • ○ These fellows will have had at least two (2) years of experience working directly with young people in a formal setting prior to this fellowship
  • ○ These fellows will likely be in their second year of college or up, but former experience, training, etc. will also be key determining factors
  • ○ Senior Fellows will instruct their class alone
  • ○ Senior Fellows may also be asked to provide some level of coaching ormentorship to Junior Fellows

All fellows must be available for training, which would take place from May 20-June 7, 2024. Further, all Senior Fellows will need to be available for travel to the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools training at the Haley Farm in Clinton, TN from May 28-June 2, 2024 (all expenses paid).

In addition to training requirements, all fellows will have the following expectations/responsibilities:

Teaching Responsibilities

  • ● Available to be the primary adult present and lead classes for a specific group of students up to 4 hours per day
  • ● Available for additional training and development--after instructional hours--up to 4 hours per day
  • ● Use innovative methods to instruct the class
  • ● Inform Extended Learning Coordinator of the materials needed for eachclass/activity in a timely mannerStudent Engagement
  • ● Engage and form meaningful relationships with students that fosters trust and sense of care
  • ● Supervise children and promote safety and respect amongst all participants
  • ● Attend and support field trips & special events
  • ● Provide students with direct support to promote emotional/psychological health anddevelopmentClassroom Climate/Management
  • ● Treat all students with respect and dignity
  • ● Cultivate a class culture of joy, fun, inquisitiveness, and respect
  • ● Reinforce program policies and procedures through role modeling and coachingstudents and interns

● Utilize behavior management techniques and trauma-informed approaches to resolving conflict/issues within the classroom

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or experience equivalent to:

  • ● Be enrolled and actively attending, or recently completed, a high school,community college, university, or academic certificated program
  • ● Participation in/completion of a specialized program and/or pursuing a certificationor degree in education, child development, or a related field
  • ● Demonstrated commitment to serving systematically marginalizedcommunities with dignity and respect
  • ● Ability to teach classes of up to 20 elementary-aged students at a time
  • ● Must be patient, flexible, responsible, and enjoy being with students
  • ● Must be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, includingon-site during regular program hours
  • ● Non-profit experience preferred
  • ● Non-profit, data collection, and staff management experience preferred
  • ● Bilingual Spanish/English a plus.
  • ● A proven proficiency in one or more of the subject areas taught in the program

COMPENSATIONAs part of their participation, all fellows are offered a stipend, which is disbursed in increments throughout the summer. Each fellow will receive their stipend upon completing certain milestones at designated points of the summer, which will be outlined in their agreement letter. Junior Fellows may earn up to a total of $7,500 over the course of the summer, while Senior Fellows may earn up to a total of $10,000 over the course of the summer.

COVID-19 SAFETY REQUIREMENTSAll EOYDC

staff are required to provide a negative COVID-19 test result prior to starting onsite work and must be retested monthly. All approved time and expenses associated with testing required by EOYDC are compensated. New hires will participate in virtual training while awaiting test results. Staff (and all parties entering EOYDC’s building) must answer health screening questions, receive a temperature check, and sanitize their hands prior to entering the building. Face masks provided by EOYDC must be worn by all parties in the building at all times.
