Job Description


JOB TITLE:
Transportation Director

Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent


SUMMARY:
Plans, directs, and controls activities concerned with operation of district transportation system by performing the following duties personally or through subordinates.


CONTRACT:
220 Days


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Holds or will obtain bus driving credentials.
  • Competent working knowledge of basic computer software programs.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality in all matters.
  • Evaluates personnel, equipment, and supplies to insure safety for all students.
  • Prepares reports for the State of Ohio and the Board of Education as needed or requested.
  • Follows all federal, state, and local laws pertaining to the transportation program.
  • Upgrades professional knowledge by attending workshops or schooling pertaining to transportation.
  • Works with drivers, building principals, and parents in ensuring responsible student behavior on each bus.
  • Works with bus drivers to eliminate unnecessary breakdowns, time-loss, and scheduling problems.
  • Keeps subordinates aware of any and all changes, problems, and/or information as needed.
  • Keeps an up-to-date list of substitute drivers and has them available as needed.
  • Has a working knowledge of all bus routes and the school district.
  • Transports individual students in special or emergency situations as needed.
  • Oversees recruitment, training, and certification of bus drivers (OBI gredentials)to the Board of Education.
  • Works with maintenance personnel to coordinate the mechanical safety of the buses and develop schedules of maintenance for district vehicles.
  • Sets routes, time schedules, and bus stops and presents for Board approval. Provide each driver and administrative center with route maps.
  • Arranges drivers for extracurricular trips as approved.
  • Maintains maintenance record of Board owned vehicles.
  • Evaluates all school bus drivers in accordance with adopted Board policy.
  • Advises the superintendent of hazardous road conditions for school closing decisions.
  • Develops and implements a rider safety program that conforms with state, insurance, and district regulations.
  • Prepares and administers transportation budget and initiates purchase orders within limitations of budget and district policy.
  • Plans for training and orientation of new bus drivers.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Directly supervises 20 to 30 employees in the transportation department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

The employee must have basic knowledge of Board policies and procedures.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND /OR EXPERIENCE:

High School diploma required, BA/BS in a related area preferred.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of organization.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.


TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:

The employee will have an operational knowledge of Windows based computers and related technology. The employee will take advantage of all district level technology training that is appropriate to their teaching assignment.


REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Must provide appropriate certificate as required for the position.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The employee will be using either Macintosh or Windows based computers and related technology on a regular basis.

The employee is determined to be at risk of exposure to bodily fluids including blood, human tissue or body fluids and must make “universal precautions” a standard operating procedure.


PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:

The employee will be evaluated in accordance with the district requirements and within the timelines specified by law.
