TITLE: EL District Coach
REPORT TO: Executive Director of English Learners K-12
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibility of the EL District Coach is to improve the quality of instruction across the curriculum in the assigned school(s).
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides instructional support to teachers of English Learners (ELs).
Assists in the development and demonstration of effective strategies for 2nd language acquisition and sheltered instruction.
Informs teachers of current learning techniques in implementing scientifically based research strategies.
Assists in analyzing and utilizing student data for instructional purposes.
Participates in department /grade level meetings at assigned schools.
Participates in parent /teacher conferences related to instruction as needed.
Provides in-class and direct instructional support to accommodate individual needs of ELs.
Assists in the selection, production and use of instructional materials; including appropriate technologies that support the goals of the accountability plan.
Designs, plans and conducts appropriate in-service programs at the assigned school(s).
Makes recommendations for the improvement of teacher performance with EL instruction.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The essential functions for the position of EL District Coach include the physical and mental involvement requirements noted in this position description in addition to regular reliable attendance given the limited number of employees available to perform the essential functions of this position. It is also essential that the EL District Coach be able to follow the directives of superiors in ensuring the harmonious operation of the department.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The EL District Coach will work in a climate-controlled environment adhering to School Board energy policy and in the outside areas, which are subject to climate extremes. The length of the workday varies as the result of evening activities or emergencies. In addition, job responsibilities may require work on weekends, holidays and attendance at meetings.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
The EL District Coach must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing. Must have the ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication system; and must be able to communicate successfully with students, teachers, parents, families, school personnel and the community.
EQUIPMENT USED:
The EL District Coach must be able to use telephones, audio-visual equipment, classroom computer, copy machines, laminators, calculators and other appropriate machines.
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
The EL District Coach must be able to perform these physical activities: standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting 10 pounds (sometimes required). Must be able to operate classroom equipment.
MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
The EL District Coach must be able to plan and implement appropriate educational programs for all students and teachers. Must be able to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions. Must keep accurate, up-to-date written records. Must be able to evaluate written data. Must be able to comply with state and parish regulations. Must be able to utilize effective classroom management techniques.
HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:
The EL District Coach must be able to work cooperatively with students, teachers, parents, school personnel and the community. Must be able to respond appropriately to supervision, and accept commendations and recommendations. Must demonstrate sensitivity / understanding in interpersonal relations with persons of diverse cultures / backgrounds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. ESL Certification is required with a minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience, preferably with the English language Learner population and / or at-risk population. Professional development hours in a second language.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
9-month employee.
