Who can apply:

This position is available to formerly incarcerated people interested in: nature and documentary filmmaking, Climate Justice, decarceration, ecological restoration, marine ecologies, and/or BIPOC food sovereignty.

About us:

Earth Equity is a collaboration between incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and other Environmental Justice practitioners. Co-created with incarcerated people at San Quentin State Prison in 2022, Earth Equity’s mission is to reduce recidivism; eliminate unjust food practices in prisons, jails, and fence-line communities; and nurture system-impacted people. We do this by creating programs which provide ecological education and job skills training to incarcerated people, supporting people in reentry, and caring for the communities and ecosystems to which they return.

About the role:

Earth Equity has recently assembled a team of four formerly incarcerated researchers to answer the question: Is a reentry support and ocean care cooperative needed and wanted in Humboldt County? Researchers attend workshops and planning meetings with partners in cooperative development, kelp restoration, and reentry to evaluate if a co-op of this nature could: create pathways to personal healing, business ownership, and meaningful work for formerly incarcerated people; contribute to BIPOC food sovereignty and kelp restoration; create a hub for Environmental Justice in our community.

Underwater filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer, , will be creating a short film documenting these processes and experiences. Earth Equity is seeking a film fellow to contribute to the planning, filming, editing, and overall creation of this documentary. During this 1 year, part-time fellowship, fellows will gain filmmaking skills and experience, 1:1 mentorship, assistance networking with other filmmakers, transportation support/meals on shoot days, and a $10,000 fellowship award.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Nova, Earth Equity, and producers to plan, film, and edit a short documentary about Earth Equity’s Kelp Restoration from the Inside Out project.
