POSITION DISCRIPTION: Area Manager
LENGTH OF WORK YEAR: Year- Round, Exempt

GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: Ensure that services provided to children and families are in compliance with federal Head Start Performance Standards and other applicable state and federal requirements in assigned geographical area. This includes: implementation and monitoring of program plans; orientation; training and supervision of staff; ensure full enrollment through adequate recruitment efforts; and ensure maintenance of facilities and grounds.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

  • Oversee and monitor Head Start sites to ensure that the environment meets health and safety standards set by the Program and is in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Assure that monthly emergency evacuation drills are conducted and recorded.
  • Assist in ensuring that routine van maintenance is carried out and that needed repairs are completed in a timely manner.
  • Oversee the monitoring and reporting of attendance of children. Ensure that vacancies are filled in a timely manner.
  • Serve as an interpreter and/or advocate for Head Start parents when necessary.
  • Ensure that each site has a community resource file and a parent library.
  • Ensure implementation of a plan to involve parents in developing and planning curriculum and in classroom activities.
  • Ensure that regular staff area meetings are held, including the printing and distribution of agendas and minutes.
  • Ensure the recruitment of substitutes for teachers and teacher assistant/van driver positions.
  • Monitor area budget for classroom and janitorial supplies. Oversee the purchasing, tracking and distribution of these supplies.
  • Supervise the purchase of and inventory tracking system for equipment and materials.
  • Submit/Review required reports.
  • Participate as a member of the management team.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manages subordinate staff; supervisors; and/or others, as assigned.
  • Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of these positions.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A BA/BS degree or higher degree in Early
  • Childhood Education, Human Development, Social Services, or related field.
  • Three or more years of experience working with children and families in an education, health or social services setting which include two or more years of supervisory experience preferably in a multi-site program.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of parents, employees of the organization, and the general public.
  • Bilingual, bi-literate, English/Spanish, English/Punjabi, English/Hmong, and/or other language ability based on program needs.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Possession of a valid California drivers' license; current personal vehicle insurance, or safe driving record sufficient to ensure insurability through Agency policy.
  • State regulations require a physical examination, current tuberculosis, fingerprint and criminal record clearance before beginning work at a child development center.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and taste or smell.
  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

IMMUNIZATIONS REQUIRED. Must be current on Measles, Pertussis, and Influenza immunizations per Senate Bill 792 in the State of California. Current proof of shots must be provided before hire.

Pay: $85,030.40 - $104,540.80 per year
