GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Work is performed as a member of Community Engagement and manages the Family Literacy and Community Services unit. The unit is made up of the Bookmobile, OASIS, and additional outreach services. Does related work as required.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule including possible evening and weekend rotations.

Although this position is based at Main Library, the person is in the Community Engagement Unit. The required work is regularly out in the community, and at various Durham County Library locations as needed.

Must possess and maintain a valid NC driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee community engagement within the Family Literacy and Community Services unit and the supervision on multiple direct reports, as well as manage the day-to-day functionality of the unit.
  • Provide excellent customer service in the team-based environment.
  • Provide mobile outreach services and resources specifically focused on reaching demographics that might otherwise face barriers to visiting physical library locations.
  • Plan and execute stimulating and engaging activities for patrons at various organizations and/or facilities.
  • Support library circulation functions as required such as checking items in and out, intake and delivery of library materials, pulling holds/requests, shelving, and customer accounts related to outreach programs and services.
  • Attend the meetings of local community groups to present and market library services while developing relationships with citizens and community partners.
  • Host events and programs to highlight library services and further develop relations with community partners.
  • Provide outreach, programs, and services at various events in the community to encourage discovery, connect the community, and lead in literacy.
  • Represent Durham County Library to the community during local events and activities.
  • Respond promptly to inquires or complaints from customers or staff; serve as an effective problem solver.
  • Assesses staff skills to analyze training needs, establishes methods to hold all staff accountable to meet expectations, provide timely and consistent corrective/disciplinary action when appropriate, and recognizes staff achievements through formal and informal methods.
  • Contribute to a problem-solving environment, actively participating in information gathering and decision making to promote the best interest of the organization, anticipates potential problems, set contingency plans and responds effectively to resolve barriers.
  • Delegate decision-making authority and task allocation appropriately to maximize the effectiveness of organizational and individual efforts.
  • Manage daily operations and unit vehicles, applying County and Library policies and procedures and utilizing effective management practices to foster a team environment.
  • Monitor and prepare budgets and planning expenditures, track disbursements, and ensure that appropriate money management guidelines are followed according to procedure manual.
  • Monitor maintenance and upkeep of vehicles, reporting issues to the Assistant Director for Planning and Facilities in a timely manner.
  • Take initiative, seek new opportunities and challenges, and apply creative and innovative thinking.
  • Performs related tasks as required or requested.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of current library practices and public library services and programs
  • Ability to identify and translate patron needs and interests into effective library services and programs
  • Computer skills including working knowledge of Microsoft office applications
  • Possess excellent internal and external customer service skills
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and comply with library rules, policies, and procedures
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain pleasant and effective working relationships with other employees, library customers, and community organizations
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited library school and three years of experience in professional library work; supervisory experience highly desired.

PREFERRED:

  • Experience developing, promoting, and executing outreach and community programs
  • Spanish Language proficiency
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
  • Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.
