DescriptionDivision/Department: Roundhouse Job Title: Steam Mechanic I Reports To: Roundhouse Foreman Type of Position: Non-Exempt/Hourly Classification: Full-time/Regular (benefits-eligible) Compensation: $18 - $24/hr. Location: Durango, Colorado Job Summary: The Roundhouse Steam Mechanic I will provide support toward the operations and maintenance of the DSNGRR steam locomotives. This position is responsible for performing daily inspections on our fleet of steam locomotives and to ensure that they comply with the regulations set by the FRA. The ideal candidate is self-motivated to develop their skillset and build knowledge in the mechanical operation and comprehensive repair of steam locomotives. While this position will primarily be based out of the Durango, Colorado railyard, it may require periods of work at other locations owned by the company. RequirementsEssential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform daily inspections and servicing of steam locomotives
Inspect car and locomotive components for compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and DSNGRR company standards and policies.
Perform maintenance activity, both scheduled and as deemed necessary by Mechanic II or Roundhouse Foreman.
Assist in the daily organization, cleaning and upkeep of shop facilities.
Repair, remove or replace defective components of locomotives such as wheels, safety appliances, truck and brake equipment, couplers and air brake valves.
Safely rig and lift parts, materials and equipment using manual and powered hoists.
Repair, remove, or replace components with the use of jacks, blocks, cutting and heating torch and other hand tools.
Education, Skill And Work Experience
Must be able to safely operate forklifts, light cranes and other heavy equipment along with a variety of shop tools such as drills, grinders, pneumatic tools, portable press, lifting/rigging gear, torches, band saw and other basic hand tools.
Prior experience working with or a demonstrated understanding of steam and diesel locomotives highly preferred.
Must be able to work independently with minimal instruction and to work collaboratively with a team
2 years of previous, relevant mechanical shop experience and/or field work experience required.
Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals and maintenance procedures with a focus on abiding by DSNGRR Safety Program policies.
Must possess a valid Driver's License and pass a preemployment Physical Capabilities Exam and drug screening.
Work Environment
Work in an industrial/shop environment around heavy equipment, various hazards and be exposed to loud noises on occasion.
Must be willing to crouch, crawl, bend, stoop, kneel and lift up to 75 pounds regularly.
