Duquesne University is Hiring a Piano Technician – School of Music Near Pittsburgh, PA

The Piano Technician is responsible for the repair and maintenance of 70 pianos located in the Mary Pappert School of Music. In addition to that, maintenance and repair of pianos located throughout the Duquesne University campus, including in the Chapel, Student Union Ballroom, Genesius Theater, School of Medicine and the Power Center Ballroom.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Maintains tuning of piano inventory

Must be available for pre-event tunings for performances (including those given by guest artists), student recitals (when requested), masterclasses, and recordings, in coordination with the MPSOM Manager of Academic Support. Work will be necessary on nights and weekends

Regulate and voice pianos

Performs repair work on pianos and piano benches, and provides information to Manager of Academic Support for ordering materials needed for these repairs

Develops, oversees, and enforces policies and procedures for student use of pianos

Traveling when necessary for school events

Completes other duties as assigned


REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum qualifications:

Experience working in both the private and public sector is required.

Experience tuning concert grand pianos for performance is required.

1-3 years of work related experience.

Valid driver’s license in good standing.

Preferred qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Music from an accredited institution.

Experience tuning for a dealer, especially a Steinway dealership, is preferred

Registered Piano Technician (Piano Technicians Guild) preferred within 2 years of hire.

Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Candidate must possess excellent tuning, regulating and voicing skills for working on our variety of pianos, from concert grands to uprights. Must have excellent communication skills to collaborate with a diverse population of musicians, facilities manager and administration. Must be a self-starter, and a highly organized individual. To possess the ability to rebuild grand pianos action is a preferred skill for the ideal candidate.

Ability to problem solve and prioritize is essential to this position.

The job should be completed on site, and it is preferred if no outside workshop is subcontracted for additional repairs.

The candidate must have their own tool set.
