General Mechanic Trainee - Facilities Management

POSITIONSUMMARY:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties at the skilled level tomaintain and repair University buildings, structures and their attendantequipment.The incumbent will supportthe mission statement of Duquesne University.The incumbent may be required to perform duties not specifically listedwithin this job description based on an immediate need and the employee'sindividual abilities to assure the safe and efficient operation of theUniversity.
DUTIESAND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Monitors, maintains, and performs basic repairs to building electrical systemssuch as fixtures, switches and outlets; assist licensed electricians withadvanced repairs as appropriate.
Monitors performance of HVAC systemsfor the facility; performs basic repair/replacement of components, asappropriate, including filter changing and cleaning of units.
Monitors and performs basicmaintenance of plumbing systems, to include standard repair of leaking faucets,cleaning obstructed waste lines, and performing basic modifications to plumbingand water supply systems; assist licensed plumbers, as appropriate.
Performs carpentry maintenance tasksincluding routine drywall repair, window repair, cabinet repair, door hardwareinstallation and painting.
Ensures proper care in the use ofmaintenance equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement ofworkplace safety and environmental practices.
Performs snow removal and spreadingsalt related to building access and hazardous walkways as assigned.
Notifies supervisor of unusualconditions.
Assists outside contractors andvendors with tasks such as utility isolation and work area access to allow forthe completion of their work as required.
Picks up of basic materials fromFacilities Management.
Completes otherduties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum qualifications:
Valid driver's license.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
A minimum of two(2) year' experience in building maintenance and /or construction with basicknowledge of mechanical and electrical systems related to buildings.
Must be in goodphysical condition to perform the daily work assignments that are inherent inthis job description, further examples are; lift and manipulate objectsweighing up to 70 pounds regularly and the ability to perform work fromladders, scaffolding and elevated surfaces.
Alternately, the successful candidate may possess any equivalent combination ofexperience and training, which provides the knowledge, skills and abilitiesrequired to perform the essential job functions. This includes, but is notlimited to, the following:
Basic and generalbuilding maintenance methods, techniques, materials and equipment.
Basic mechanicalprinciples.
Basic electricalprinciples.
Basic computerskills.
Building and facilitiesmaintenance, safety and awareness of security issues.
The occupationalhazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Follows basic androutine verbal and written instructions.
Understands andfollows specific instructions and procedures.
Reads, understands,follows, and suggests safety procedures.
Communicatesclearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Works as a teammember and foster a cooperative work environment.
Safely uses handand power tools applicable to the trade.
Safely andefficiently operate, maintain, and repair equipment, machinery, and toolsnormally used within your work environment.
Perform a varietyof routine and preventive building maintenance tasks to include, but notlimited to, hot water systems, tile and flooring, and minor repairs toappliances.
Avoidsconfrontational situations and report all incidents to Facilities Management.
Integrity anddependability.
