The Digital Media Strategist within the Student Affairs Communications Team supports the division’s online presence, promoting engagement, and facilitating effective communication with various stakeholders. The primary responsibilities of this role encompass social media execution and website facilitation.

The Digital Media Strategist will also utilize various platforms and media to continuously improve communication processes so they reflect best practices across the division and the field, particularly around inclusiveness for diverse audiences. This position requires significant coverage of events and programs for purposes of documenting, sharing, and telling the story of Student Affairs and Duke, some of which take place after 5:00 pm. and on weekends.

Job Responsibilities

Social Media: 40%

  • Create engaging content to support the Student Affair pillars of belonging, engagement, continuous learning, and well-being for social media platforms, including but not limited to, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook and X.
  • With oversight from supervisor, maintain an editorial calendar on for social media campaigns.
  • Track and analyze weekly and monthly social media analytics and utilize this data to propose new strategies and methods to improve engagement goals.
  • Support social media requests for Student Affairs departments that do not have their own social accounts.
  • Conduct social media accessibility trainings for Student Affairs units and their student interns upon request.
  • Monitor and engage with social media feeds daily, checking tags and mentions, saving ideas from other institutions, sharing relevant content via stories, and responding to messages promptly.

Website Responsibilities: 25%

  • With oversight from supervisor, facilitate and upkeep the Student Affairs website.
  • Develop training materials for web editors.
  • Manage access for web editors and provide support when needed.
  • Receive periodic accessibility reports from OIT and address any issues promptly.
  • Act as a backup for web editors who require assistance or are unavailable to perform necessary changes. This includes completing support tickets/requests that come in from colleagues across the division.
  • Manage all pages without a dedicated web editor.
  • Continuously evaluate and improve website usability
  • Upon launch of the Student Affairs intranet, maintain cohesion across the various department’s entries to keep a uniform experience for users.

Digital media: 15%

  • Create visually appealing and brand aligning graphics for various topics such as student stories, staff and student advice, email chasers, digestible versions of announcements, weekly wellness and events campaigns, general campus life, and others as requested.
  • Design and upload flyers to the DukeFlyer portal as requested.
  • Design and edit necessary visuals for the website. This could include traditional graphics or photos.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders on their visual identity and how it fits with the broader Student Affairs image.
  • Assist Student Affairs Communications Team with Photo and Video requests as needed (this could include after hours events)

Shared Tools: 10%

  • Manage, organize, and provide insights for new employees and current staff regarding the Communicators Toolkit.
  • Share the toolkit with the relevant stakeholders within the organization.
  • Provide access for departments and individuals using design software, ensuring seamless collaboration and efficient utilization of design resources.
  • Create templates for standard designs will be essential in streamlining the team's workflow and maintaining visual consistency.
  • Manage Campus Center screens, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards, providing an engaging and inclusive experience for our diverse audience.
  • Serve as an administrator for social media platforms used by the Student Affairs Comms team as well as others across the division.
  • Ensure the LinkTree is up to date

Other Duties as Assigned: 10%

  • Advise student groups as needed
  • Support Student Affairs Communications initiatives as needed, such as Project Media and other affiliated programs
  • Support the mission of the Division of Student Affairs by completing tasks that may not explicitly fall within the areas listed above

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

Work requires communications, marketing, strategic planning, analytical and organizational skills generally required through completion of Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, English or a related field.

Experience

Requires four years of experience in journalism, public relations, marketing or related field with experience posting and publishing through print and electronic mediums, including content management systems. Work requires communications, analytical and organizational skills necessary to manage and coordinate a variety of tasks. Experience working in an academic environment is preferred.
