Occupational Summary

The Duke PopHealth DataShare is a designated School of Medicine shared resource facilitating researcher access to health data from multiple sources, coupled with regulatory, informatics, and biostatistics expertise in the use of this data. We are looking for an experienced Biostatistician to join our team using large healthcare administrative data sources to answer pressing questions in multiple health sciences research fields.

This position requires:

  • Familiarity with large healthcare administrative claims databases such as Medicare, Medicaid, or Electronic Health Record data
  • Knowledge of and experience in SAS programming
  • The ability to work independently to perform basic and intermediate statistical analysis and programming
  • Simultaneous balancing of multiple competing projects and deadlines
  • Comfort working with highly confidential and sensitive analyses and documentation, and familiarity with institutional, local, state, and federal policies dictating its use

Preferred Skills

  • Performs complex programming and troubleshooting efficiently in SAS
  • Experience in multi-level models, generalized linear models, and survival analysis

Work Performed

Statistical Analysis (60%)

With appropriate guidance, prepares statistical analysis plans for a variety of project types (e.g., prospective, retrospective, intervention). Independently generates descriptive and basic test statistics, analysis of basic data requests, and generates statistical modeling results (e.g., mixed models, generalized linear models, survival analysis). Learns new statistical methods as needed and applies new skills to future projects. Performs SAS programming efficiently (e.g., macros, writing own code). Independently identifies and corrects coding errors and validates output and results. Combines multiple disparate raw databases and derives analysis variables accurately.

Documents analyses, creates summaries, and presents results in written and verbal form. Leads or participates actively in developing research-ready analysis data sets, writing statistical programs, and generating statistical output products (e.g., tables, listings, figures). Assess output quality and accuracy prior to sharing. Able to work on any phase of a manuscript project, from initial meeting with an investigator to final review of a manuscript prior to submission for publication, with guidance. Builds excellent documentation to effectively return to a manuscript project after long intervals or for use during post-study validation of analyses by others. Contributes meaningfully to discussions of analyses and identifies next steps for analyses.

Collaboration (15%)

Collaborates effectively with analytic and research personnel. Identifies potential data problems from analytic queries and brings them to the attention of the team. Demonstrates understanding of project data sets and shares knowledge with collaborators.

Participates in most statistical aspects of a research project, with consultation or assistance when needed. Represents the functional group in project team meetings and contributes constructively to project discussions.

Dissemination (15%)

Documents analyses, creates summaries, and presents results in written and verbal form to research teams during project meetings. Contributes to analysis and writing without guidance during all phases of manuscript and report development and revision. Independently drafts methods and results sections for inclusion in manuscripts submitted to peer-reviewed journals, abstracts, and grants. Collaborates closely with investigators, sponsors, and other project leadership to ensure that research project results and conclusions are presented accurately and without bias.

Project Management (5%)

Understands the project scope of work and accurately projects to the time and effort needed to complete each phase of project. Creates timelines for statistical project management, with assistance from project leader and statistical managers. Recognizes when changes to scope will require significantly more effort than allotted and bring this to the attention of the study team.

Data Governance (5%)

Handles and secures highly confidential and sensitive analyses and documentation.

Education/ Training

Work requires a minimum of a Master's degree in (bio)statistics or related field and no relevant experience, or a bachelors degree in (bio)statistics or related field and 2 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination or relevant education and/or work experience.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Work requires a minimum of a Master's degree in (bio)statistics or related field and no relevant experience, or a bachelors degree in (bio) statistics or related field and 2 years relevant experience, or an equivalent combination or relevant education and/or work experience.

Experience

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE Prior contribution to analysis of research projects, a working knowledge of SAS, and solid command of the English language is required.
