Duke University is Hiring a CREW LEADER Near Durham, NC

Occupational Summary

Perform and troubleshoot electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, or paint projects and systems, equipment and related devices. Assign, direct and review the work of Duke and contract labor team. Inspect and certify work is in compliance with state and local codes. Plan, estimate and commission new installations or renovation of existing systems and equipment. Assist in the training of personnel in safe construction practices in healthcare. Act as shop supervisor when the supervisor is absent. Provide periodic reviews of Duke personnel and contract labor as assigned.

Work Performed

  • Plan and schedule work for the group, to include Duke and contract labor, ensuring proper distribution of assignments and proper staffing, space, equipment and supplies for adequate performance of duties.
  • Provide project management for certain projects that require specific and direct supervision of construction and/or maintenance activities; provide project tracking for expended labor and materials.
  • Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local codes; direct and follow-up any required rework or modifications; schedule inspections with City of Durham inspectors as required.
  • Apply safety precaution pertaining to: Safety regulations and procedures; lock-out/tag-out, chemical safety, hazard communication program; personal protective equipment; lifting procedures, back injury prevention; ladder safety, flammable storage, fire extinguisher training and others as required.
  • Layout, assemble and install systems and equipment in Medical Center buildings in accordance with blueprints and codes using appropriate healthcare construction precautions.
  • Interpret plans, sketches, wiring diagrams, and specifications; identify all terms and symbols while estimating and installing construction projects.
  • Ensure that employees and contract labor are properly trained to perform duties; ensure a safe work environment; ensure compliance with Medical Center and The Joint Commission safety regulations as well as state and local codes.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training: Work requires educational background normally equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Work requires six years in construction or maintenance. Requires an active North Carolina contractor's license in the required discipline, if applicable; valid N.C. driver's license and a driving history acceptable under the guidelines of the Safe Driving Policy required.

Skills: Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written, with employees, management and customers. Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. Ability to communicate effectively and respond appropriately in routine and emergency situations. Must respect the privacy of patients and maintain the confidentiality of any patient information related to their treatment. Ability to complete daily records, logs, time sheets, and required reports.
