Duke Health Integrated Practice is Hiring a Certified Ophthalmic Technician Near Durham, NC

JOB LOCATION

Duke Eye Center - 2351 Erwin Rd, Durham, NC

JOB HOURS

The schedule for this position is day shifts, Monday-Friday, with no weekends or holidays.

JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician at our Duke Eye Center to assist Eye Center physicians and other technical support colleagues in performing diagnostic tests necessary for evaluation of patient eye problems.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including, but not limited to: recording chief complaint and HPI, measuring visual acuity of patient (with and without glasses, for distance and near vision), performing refractometry, obtain optical and lensometry measurements to determine lens prescription and correct acuity problems, conduct central and peripheral visual field tests, ocular motility tests, color vision tests, assessment of pupils prior to dilation, thorough slit lamp exam to examine the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber of the eye in order to note variations from normal prior to dilation, indentation and applanation tonometry tests to determine intraocular pressure, instillation of eye drops, etc.
  • Learn and perform diagnostic testing including, but not limited to: OCT, HVF, GVF, Topography, Pachymetry, IOL Measurements.
  • Depending on clinic environment:
  • Perform HLD and sterilization of instruments as needed.
  • Maintain Physical environment of exam and procedure rooms.
  • Calibration, maintenance, and monitoring of equipment.
  • Scribing duties/facilitation of clinic for assigned physicians.
  • Assists with ordering medical/office supplies.
  • Assist with appointments and telephone call screening activities.
  • Under direction of physician, may call pharmacy with prescription refills.
  • Able to function as Joint Commission Liaison or Infection Prevention Liaison.
  • Direct the flow of patients examined by an Eye Center physician; obtain medical and personal data for patient charts; screen patients for conditions excluding ocular examination; arrange for laboratory and other tests, ophthalmic photography, outpatient studies and patient admissions and surgery as requested by physician; alleviate patient and family concerns by explaining diagnostic procedures and method of treatment.
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate or educational offerings. Support the development of other staff and former learners. -Assist in professional development of Ophthalmic Assistants and Certified Ophthalmic Assistants.

JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Work requires an education background generally equivalent to a high school education.
  • Requires certification for Ophthalmic Technicians by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • Must have BLS Certification
