 MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELOR

 

Classification 

Exempt, 10-Month EmployeeReports to Director of Counseling Primary FunctionDr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School is seeking a certified/licensed School Counselor to support and educate middle/high school students. Under the general supervision of the Director of School Counseling, the school counselor works with students to develop and implement plans around academic and social-emotional success. School counselors work with the school community, including scholars, families, staff, and school leadership to advocate for programs and services that positively impact scholar academic success in alignment with New York State Learning Standards, social-emotional development, and higher education and career readiness. The framework for the delivery of school counseling practices and services is guided by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and the New York State (NYSSCA) Comprehensive Counseling Models and the American School Counselor Association’s Ethical Standards. 

Required Education and Experience

  • Masters in School Counseling or Social Work from an accredited institution
  • New York State certification
  • 3 to 5 years of demonstrated success working in urban school settings- preferred but not required
  • Bi-Lingual- preferred but not required

Required Competencies & Qualifications

  • Uphold the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) professional standards
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions
  • Submit all required notes and documentation by the required deadlines
  • Effectively conduct crisis intervention and social-emotional assessments
  • Integrate into the established policies and culture of the department
  • Work well collaboratively with a large and diverse team
  • Highly organized, motivated, self-driven team player
  • Work effectively with staff, scholars, and the community
  • Organize tasks, set priorities and meet policies and deadlines
  • Fulfill ongoing professional learning and requirements
  • Respond appropriately to evaluation and changes in the work setting
  • Willingness to learn and grow professionally
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Essential Functions & Accountabilities:

  • The school counselor supervises students in the areas of social-emotional, academic and college counseling. 
  • Work collaboratively with the clinical social work team to respond to crises and provide individualized support plans.
  • Develop and implement individualized academic plans for all students on your caseload.
  • Provide support to students struggling with peer relationships, coping strategies, and effective social skills.
  • Conduct group or individual counseling sessions, both mandated and unmandated. 
  • Possess an appreciation and sensitivity for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging.
  • Contribute to improving student attendance and a focus on increased graduation rates.
  • Assess and refer students for multi-tiered level support.
  • Responsive to the diverse learning needs, strengths, interests, and experiences of all students. 
  • Use available technology resources to enhance the school counseling program.
  • Engage and collaborate with colleagues and the community to develop and sustain a common culture that supports high expectations for student learning.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Cooperate with parents and teachers as well as other interested parties.
  • Facilitate access to community resources.
 

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time 10-month position. The regular hours and workdays are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm in addition to mandatory special events which might require extended work hours.

 

Salary Range

$65,000 - $95,000 Annually (Based on Experience)

 

Travel 

Minimum to no travel required
