Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy is Hiring a Middle School English Language Arts Teacher Near Milwaukee, WI

Overview

The Middle School ELA Teacher is responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering effective instruction in English and writing to students that instills a love for literacy and supports students’ understanding of real world application while setting students up for success beyond high school. This position will play a pivotal role in shaping students' language and communication skills. The successful candidate fosters a positive and engaging learning environment that promotes student understanding and proficiency in English and writing concepts. The Middle School ELA Teacher will utilize assessment data to determine progress against instructional objectives and will utilize instructional strategies and differentiated instruction to support all students to achieve their goals. In this position, the Middle School ELA Teacher will also work collaboratively with staff members, administrators, families, and other stakeholders to support students to achieve. The Middle School ELA Teacher will serve as a knowledgeable expert in the subject matter, employing and implementing a comprehensive English/Writing curriculum while fostering a love for literature and nurturing effective writing abilities among all students. The successful candidate will also possess effective communication skills, adaptability, and a zest for helping students succeed in mathematics while fostering a positive attitude toward reading and writing and encouraging lifelong learning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Leadership

  • Collaborate and lead as part of the greater school team and community.
  • Exemplify a relentless commitment and passion for improving conditions for a successful future for all students.
  • Define and set a collaborative vision that demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and anti-racism.

Curriculum Planning & Instructional Delivery

  • Develop, organize, and implement an engaging and standards-aligned English curriculum that includes literature, writing, grammar, and language skills.
  • Teach a variety of literary genres, including novels, plays, poetry, and non-fiction, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills in students.
  • Instruct students in the art of effective writing, covering various forms such as essays, research papers, creative writing, and analytical pieces.
  • Provide constructive feedback to help students improve their writing skills.
  • Integrate grammar and language instruction into the curriculum to enhance students' understanding and application of language conventions.
  • Create lesson plans that incorporate a variety of instructional strategies to address different learning styles.
  • Deliver clear and engaging lessons using a variety of teaching methods, such as lectures, discussions, group activities, and hands-on experiences.
  • Differentiate instruction to accommodate diverse learning needs and abilities within the classroom.

Assessment and Evaluation

  • Design and administer assessments to measure student understanding and progress.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students on their performance and academic growth.

Classroom Management

  • Establish and maintain a positive, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning.
  • Implement effective classroom management techniques to ensure a focused and respectful learning atmosphere.

Individualized Support

  • Provide additional support to students who may benefit from support with subject matter concepts.
  • Offer extra help sessions, tutoring, or other resources to assist students in their learning.
  • Use data to drive small group and individual learning experiences.

Parent and Guardian Communication:

  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians to share information about student progress, upcoming events, and ways they can support their child's learning.
  • Partner with parents or guardians to develop strategies tailored to the needs of each student.

Professional Development & Collaboration

  • Stay informed about the latest developments in English and writing education, teaching methodologies, and technology integration.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and educators within the school to align curriculum, share best practices, and contribute to a cohesive educational program.

Extracurricular Involvement

  • Participate in or oversee literacy-related extracurricular activities, such as book clubs, competitions, or special projects.

Technology Integration

  • Incorporate educational technology tools and resources into instruction to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes.

Record Keeping

  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and other relevant information.

Professionalism

  • Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with students, colleagues, and parents, adhering to ethical standards and school policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education.
  • Knowledge of general learning and child development concepts, theories and fundamentals.
  • Strong commitment to, belief in, and alignment with mission and vision of the school.
  • Licensed to teach in the state of WI.
  • Prior experience as a Special Education Teacher (highly recommended).
  • Capacity to supervise group work.
  • Outstanding planning, conflict resolution techniques, problem-solving skills.
  • Assess student projects with their skill level and style in mind.

  • Excellent organization, time management, and follow up skills, demonstrating ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A strong sense of urgency, prioritizing student experience and outcomes.
  • Strong sense of team and ability to work with and on a team to invest team members and drive outcomes.
  • Charter school experience in an urban setting.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of mobility through a large campus, and at times prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) most of the workday.

Other Requirements

  • The job may require occasional evening or weekend hours for family engagement events and meetings.
