Summary

The Professional Land Surveyor 2 leads a variety of surveying tasks including topographic surveys, boundary surveys, preparing legal descriptions, mapping, 3D scanning, and more.

The person in this position is expected to exercise a strong work ethic, organizational skills, leadership, and reliability.

A Professional Land Surveyor 2 should demonstrate advanced proficiency with survey fundamentals and be able to quickly learn and apply new survey skills with limited oversight from others.

This person is expected to work well with others, absorb and apply constructive criticism, and seek guidance from more experienced members of the team as necessary.

Job Responsibilities and Duties

Technical Expertise

  • Fully proficient understanding of specific surveying services

Project Delivery

Produces the following independently and assist others in the field, office or both. Field data including :

  • Clear and concise field notes
  • Basic equipment maintenance checks
  • Topographic data collection
  • Monument field recovery

Produces the following under limited direction / oversight from others in the office :

  • Basic boundary resolutions
  • Basic construction calculations
  • Control network planning
  • Point cloud extractions
  • Research of public records
  • Basic construction layout
  • Remote sensing data

Understanding Budget and Schedule

Strong understanding of scopes, schedules, and budgets. Able to predict and deliver individual tasks within a set level of effort.

Able to consistently meet scope, schedule, and budget expectations on projects. Assists with the scoping, planning, and budget creation on more complex tasks.

Industry Standards and Regulations

Provide mentoring to staff on industry or client standards such as the following :

  • ALTA surveys
  • Local platting, surveying standards
  • ASPRS
  • BLM cadastral surveys
  • Client standards

Client Interaction

Frequent direct communications with clients to resolve technical issues on moderate to complex projects. Leads client project meetings.

Understands appropriate messaging. Understands legal risks.

Other duties as assigned.

Level of Work / Accountability

Performs moderate to advanced levels of professional services resolution. Operates with a high level of autonomy. Reviews the work of others.

May perform some assistant project management tasks. Provides technical guidance on proposals.

Education and / or Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Years of experience required : 6 years

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • PLS required
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to create and interpret graphs and understand statistical analysis.

Able to cut brush using chain saw or machete. Able to dig with shovel or digging bars, use a jack hammer and sledgehammer, and drive in stakes and rebar (monuments).

Able to walk and hike through rough terrain, snow, and ice. Able to routinely lift and carry between 30 and 50 pounds. May need to work at remote sites.

Work may be split between the field and office. Field work is performed outdoors during year-round weather conditions. Work ranges from high-density urban to extremely remote settings.

In the office : The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
