DOWL seeks an enthusiastic, self-motivated, and highly organized Water Resources Designer to join our Surface Water Practice in Portland, Oregon. DOWL’s Surface Water Practice is recognized for its expertise in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, fish passage design, highway drainage design, drainage planning and design, watershed modeling, floodplain studies, and construction administration. The position will focus on urban water resources and involve a wide range of responsibilities and work assignments, including both office and fieldwork.

Typical tasks include:

  • Field assessment of hydraulic structures and conveyance systems
  • Hydrologic analysis of small and large drainage basins
  • Hydraulic analysis and design of gravity-fed conveyance systems
  • Assist with the planning and design of drainage solutions; including stormwater storage, conveyance, and pollution reduction systems, culvert replacements, fish passage design, floodplain analysis, and other water resource projects
  • Assist in the development and coordination of permit submittals to public jurisdictions
  • Produce construction drawings, estimates and specifications
  • Write technical reports
  • Provide technical recommendations to other engineering disciplines

The successful candidate will:

  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams and contribute in meaningful ways
  • Communicate with project partners and clients
  • Apply state-of-the-art tools; including ArcGIS, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SMS, Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis, XPSWMM, WWHM2012, and other programs to perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses
  • Use AutoCAD and MicroStation to produce construction drawings
  • Experience a diverse range of work environments
  • Develop creative and cost-effective design solutions to challenging multi-discipline and water infrastructure projects

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • Have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.

Desired qualifications also include:

  • Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • An academic emphasis in hydrology and/or hydraulics
  • Experience in the use of ArcGIS, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SMS, Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis, XPSWMM, MicroStation, OpenRoads, and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Excellent technical writing skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist with field investigations, analysis of alternative solutions, technical report writing, and preparing construction documents.
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic analyses using computer applications such as HEC-RAS, SMS, Autodesk Storm and Sanitary Analysis, and/or WWHM2012.
  • Other engineering related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical documents. Ability to respond to inquiries from clients, co-workers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to clients, co-workers, and the public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.
  • Able to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts, such as statistics, probabilities, geometry and trigonometry.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, and walk. The employee is required to talk and to hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is generally an office setting, but intermittent field work is expected. The noise level in the office environment is usually moderate, while noise on construction sites may be high and require the use of hearing protection.

Geographical location is taken into consideration for compensation.
