Dover Middle School is Hiring a Special Education Teacher - Autism Support Near Dover, NH

The Dover School District is seeking a special educator to lead a program for students with Autism that focuses on competence, engagement and communication. Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): Develop and implement individualized education plans for students with autism, tailoring instruction and support to meet their unique needs, abilities, and goals.Assessment and Evaluation: Assess students to identify their strengths and challenges, and regularly evaluate their progress. This may involve standardized tests, observations, and other assessment tools.Curriculum Development: Adapt and create educational materials and curriculum to address the specific learning styles and needs of students with autism. This often involves using visual aids, structured teaching methods, and other evidence-based practices.Behavior Management: Help students with autism manage their behavior and develop appropriate social skills. Implement positive behavior support strategies and techniques to address challenging behaviors.Communication Support: Assist students in developing and improving their communication skills, which may include speech therapy, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, and other methods.Collaboration: Work closely with other professionals, including speech therapists, occupational therapists, school psychologists, and support staff to provide a holistic approach to supporting students with autism.Parent and Caregiver Communication: Maintain open and regular communication with parents or caregivers, providing updates on their child's progress and strategies for extending learning and support at home.Inclusion Support: Collaborate with general education teachers to facilitate the inclusion of students with autism in mainstream classrooms when appropriate, providing necessary accommodations and support.Adaptive Technology: Utilize technology and assistive devices to enhance the learning experience for students with autism, as well as to help them develop independent living and vocational skills.Data Tracking and Reporting: Maintain detailed records of student progress, behavior, and goals, and provide regular progress reports to parents, school administrators, and other relevant stakeholders.Professional Development: Stay current with the latest research and best practices in the field of autism education through ongoing professional development.Advocacy: Advocate for the needs and rights of students with autism within the school system, and ensure that they receive the services and accommodations they require to succeed academically and socially.Crisis Intervention: Be prepared to handle and de-escalate situations in which students may exhibit challenging or potentially harmful behavior, ensuring the safety of both the students and others in the school.Sensory Support: Create sensory-friendly environments and activities to accommodate sensory sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviors often associated with autism.Promote Inclusivity: Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment where students with autism feel valued and accepted.
