A person in this position performs highly skilled workcompleting a variety of concrete maintenance, repair, and constructionassignments in Public Works Operations. This person removes material, setsforms, finishes concrete, assures that job quality is performed in accordancewith current specifications, and provides training to other concrete workers.
Generally, the hiring range is $49,243-$61,553 annually. Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will be taken into consideration when determining hiring salary.

  • Utilizes equipment and materials to replace, construct, and finish concrete sidewalks, curbs, slabs, walls, and drainage structures. Set concrete forms. Places and ties re-bar and reinforcement steel. Operates various types of concrete construction tools and equipment including volumetric mix trucks, mud jacks, concrete pumps, curb machines, concrete saws, and other concrete hand tools and equipment.
  • Prepares estimates and places orders for concrete.
  • Operates other vehicles and equipment including pickups, tandem axle trucks, tractor trailers, rollers, sweepers, loaders, backhoes, snowplows, sanders, motor graders, screening mills, paving machines, and other construction equipment.
  • Interprets construction blueprints and designs and fabricates materials for new construction and repair. Sets and checks grades.
  • Performs snow and ice removal and applies anti-icing and de-icing products. Required to be available during snow removal and emergency management situations.
  • Assists with the setup and placement of traffic control signage and devices in work zones. Performs traffic flagging during construction activities in work zones.
  • Makes repairs to fix potholes and other defects in concrete and asphalt roadways as needed.
  • Responds to emergency situations including, but not limited to fires, flooding, and natural disasters.
  • Performs equipment operator duties when not assigned to specific concrete project work.
  • Performs daily equipment and vehicle inspections before use. Performs minor maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
  • Demonstrates and promotes a professional appearance, proper personal conduct, and appropriate behavior.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Supervision is periodic, and work isreviewed for quality upon completion.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not directly superviseother employees but frequently instructs others on concrete placement andfinishing techniques.
INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work is often performed independently with minimal supervision onconcrete construction projects. The work requires a high degree of skill andself-initiative to produce a quality concrete product.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years ofrelated experience in the field of concrete construction, to include concreteremoval, placement, and finishing.
  • A combination of experience and educationmay be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge: 

  • Read and understand blueprints, diagrams and written and verbal instructions.
  • Knowledge of the skills required to produce quality concrete work to repair and construct streets, sidewalks, slabs, walls, and other concrete projects.
  • Knowledge of related safety practices and procedures.

Skills: 

  • Ability to perform mathematical computations for estimating material quantities.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of equipment and tools related to concrete construction.
  • Skill in concrete project layout, form setting, and finishing.

Abilities: 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to layout plans from blueprints or established plans.
  • Ability to train other employees.
  • Ability to read equipment gauges, manuals, and reports.
  • Ability to distinguish equipment warning signals.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must possess a valid State of Colorado Commercial Driver License Class B upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. Incumbent is expected to obtain a Commercial Driver License Class A to achieve career progression in this classification series.
  • Incumbents in this position must meet the Department of Transportation physical exam and drug and alcohol testing requirements.
  • Must have a Flagger Certification.
  • Must complete assigned training as required by the Department.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Physical Work Environment: Work is performed primarily outdoors in allweather conditions with exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, fumes, andchemicals.

Physical Demands:
This job performs heavy physical labor forextended periods of time requiring the ability to lift a maximum of 100 poundsand frequently lift or carry objects up to 50 pounds. Frequent bending,stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing is required. Requires goodhand/eye and hand/foot coordination to operate tools, equipment, and vehicles.Ability to perform continuous strenuous physical labor for up to 10 hours a day(may exceed 12 hours during snow removal or emergency construction situations).
Material and Equipment DirectlyUsed: Concrete, admixtures, curingcompounds, sealants, sand, gravel, salt, and other aggregates. Volumetric mix trucks, mud jacks, concretepumps, curb machines, concrete saws, and other concrete hand tools andequipment. Dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, excavators, compactors, pickups, andother heavy equipment.
