Job Summary

SUMMARY: This is skilled work in responding to emergency and non-emergency calls in Douglas County to provide basic and advanced life support and medical care, and to transport patients to the appropriate medical facility. Work also involves assessing patients’ needs, directing medical care, and coordinating emergency response with hospital and other public safety personnel. Serves as lead worker to EMTs in assigned work unit.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Responding to various types of emergencies such as fires, accidents, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and natural catastrophes; driving emergency medical vehicles to the scene of an emergency
  • Administering aid to injured or sick persons; checking vital signs and providing hospital personnel with information concerning the nature of the emergency and the steps necessary to provide immediate medical assistance, consistent with EMS licensing level
  • Operating medical equipment and administering medication to injured or sick persons on-site and in-transit to appropriate medical facility as authorized
  • Transporting injured or sick persons to appropriate medical facility
  • Ability to perform exterior support functions on fire ground including rehabilitation sector
  • Inspecting, testing, cleaning, and maintaining station equipment and vehicles; reporting safety hazards or maintenance problems to the Station Officer or Captain
  • Maintaining an adequate inventory supply aboard emergency medical vehicles through regular checks
  • Preparing, completing, maintaining, and submitting reports pertaining to shift activities
  • Participating in in-service training programs, certification classes, and drills as required
  • Attending classes to maintain certification(s)
  • Performing general cleaning and maintenance of shift station
  • All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents
  • Performing other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Current NREMT certification or current Georgia State AEMT License
  • One year professional work experience preferred
  • Certification as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or higher by the Georgia Department of Public Health

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
  • Must have no felony convictions within the past ten (10) years.
  • Must have the ability to pass a physical examination
  • Must have the ability to pass the minimum physical fitness requirements

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must have and maintain a valid United States driver’s license (Georgia Class F or equivalent), a satisfactory motor vehicle record (MVR) and the ability and willingness to drive a county vehicle; if assigned job duties require the use of a vehicle
  • Certification as an EMT, AEMT-Advanced, OR Paramedic by the Georgia Department of Public Health; maintain certification
  • Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); maintain certification
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ACLS) per license level

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of the geography of the County and the ability to become familiar with all County roads and highways
  • Knowledge of area hospitals and their capabilities and limitations regarding the handling of specific safety and medical emergencies
  • Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automatic (AED) defibrillation in a pulseless, non-breathing patient
  • Ability to administer approved intravenous solutions
  • Ability to administer parenteral injections of medications as prescribed by the the State Office of EMS Scope of Practice – Advanced Provider Level
  • Ability to analyze situations and initiate appropriate course of action
  • Ability to react quickly and calmly while under pressure in emergency situations
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate reports and records
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate assigned vehicle
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions
  • Ability to follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures

Ability to retain valid certification as an EMT, Advanced-EMT, or Paramedic on an bi-annual basis

Salary: $49,120.49 - $54,155.05 annually, plus full benefits package
