Description

Summary:

The Interim Program Director for the Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology is directly responsible and accountable for the coordination and operation of successful surgical technology program. This includes ensuring the fulfillment of educational goals, objectives, and outcomes and ensuring program compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies, as applicable. These responsibilities require leadership in both academic and workforce areas and include meeting student retention goals, participating in educational planning, program organization, motivating, and advising students. The individual that serves as an Interim Program Director is a faculty member who serves as a liaison with the administration of the College, while also performing administrative functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the administration, organization, and supervision of the program.
  • Continuous quality review and improvement of the program.
  • Academic oversight, including curriculum planning and development.
  • Actively involved in the selection of Surgical Technology students as a member of the surgical technology interview panel.
  • Ensure student documents are compliant with current Dorsey College requirements and meet site standards for clinical placement.
  • Identify and recruit qualified faculty for the program.
  • Responsible for all clinical activity until the time in which a Clinical Coordinator is required.
  • Assist in new student orientation and graduate recognition.
  • Participate in student activities and be available to students on break, before, and after school.
  • Actively engage in retention activities including identifying at risk students.
  • Prepare annual reports and extensive self-study reports.
  • Participate in budget planning.
  • Provide counseling to applicants and admitted students regarding admission, transfer, and dismissal from the program.
  • Participate in didactic and/or clinical instruction, as appropriate.
  • Pursue ongoing formal training designed to maintain and upgrade professional, instructional, and administrative capabilities.

Requirements

 KNOWLEDGE – SKILLS – ABILITIES:

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills as well as active listening.
  • Strong ability to multi-task with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work well with a team of other department managers to ensure symmetry of operations.
  • Proficient with basic office equipment, computers, and computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of Dorsey policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of regulatory and accreditation agency policies (CAAHEP), as applicable.
  • Working knowledge of Campus Vue software preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to motivate, guide, and help students complete their program of study.
  • Must be resourceful and able to problem solve, strong initiative and solid judgment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Holds, at a minimum, an associate degree with a concentration in surgical technology.
  • Documents education or experience in instructional methodology, curriculum design and program planning.
  • Be a graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency.
  • Possess a credentials in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the national Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • Have a minimum total of five years of experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both, within the past ten years.

WORKING / PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • May be required to work hours outside normal business hours to meet business needs; this includes working earlier or later than set hours and weekends as needed.
