POSITION SUMMARY

The Donation Coordinator I (DC I) serves as the tissue allocation expert and point of contact for DNWest. This role coordinates all functions of the 24x7x365 donation program including receiving referrals and assessing for donation suitability, determining donor suitability with all DNWest tissue processing partners, coordinating recovery arrangements, and advance to a Donation Coordinator II role which includes obtaining appropriate authorization and evaluating donor medical/social history. As the principal source of information for tissue allocation, the Donation Coordinator I directs communication between DNWest and tissue processor partners. The Donation Coordinator I works collaboratively with a range of professionals from both inside and outside DNWest. This role interacts and communicates with the Donor Operations management team, Manager on Duty (MOD), recovery staff, organ clinical staff, coroners, funeral homes, hospital staff, and other key individuals and groups in a manner that reflects positively on the organization.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Referral Intake and Donor Screening:

  • Exhibits a “rule in vs rule out” mindset while conducting all responsibilities.
  • Accepts inbound referral calls and emails from hospitals, hospices, medical examiner/coroner’s offices, and assesses suitability for organ and tissue donation.
  • Captures all information accurately and completely into donor management software.
  • Provides in-depth medical screening of potential tissue donors by effectively communicating with referral source personnel to determine suitability for tissue recovery based on Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB), DNWest, and tissue processor guidelines.
  • Discusses screening information with MOD (Manager on Duty) as appropriate.
Case Coordination:
  • Reviews all associated clinical data and case notes in iTransplant (iTX) to preempt processors’ needs and identify any missing information or documentation that require follow-up with external partners.
  • Ensures the suitability, timely recovery, and maximal yield of donated tissues, while adhering to regulatory requirements, and best practices.
  • Coordinates all aspects required for donation to occur, including coordinating the recovery process with other participating agencies such as hospital, medical examiner/coroner, transportation vendors, and funeral directors.
  • Offers tissue to tissue processing partners and accept tissue for recovery on behalf of select partners.
Family Care Specialist – Donation Discussion:
  • Expected competency sign-off for Family Care Specialist – Donation Discussion skill within Donor Operations roadmap timeframe.
  • Utilizes all resources to maximize the opportunity to provide families with information regarding donation with a goal of obtaining authorization.
  • Conducts donation discussion with legally appropriate individual and documents authorization per DNWest’s policy.
  • Conducts and documents appropriate medical/social history interview with appropriate person(s) to ensure a safe and reliable supply of tissue.
  • Deals with death and grieving families in a caring and professional manner.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ability to efficiently and effectively maneuver through Microsoft office systems, computers, and office equipment, and use a telephone system.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills; ability to function independently and collaboratively; demonstrated problem-solving and creative thinking skills and well-developed personal stress management skills.
  • Ability to communicate and present information effectively and concisely within a team environment.
  • Ability to speak and communicate clearly in order to accurately convey information to donor families, hospital staff, and transplant/procurement personnel in person or by phone.
  • Proactive team player who can multitask with ease and uphold organizational core values.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal, priority-setting, and strategic skills. Strong attention to detail, written and verbal communication skills. Thrives in a fast-paced dynamic environment and adjusts to new priorities as required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or an equivalent degree/diploma/certification in an allied health field is preferred. Minimum of 3 years of experience may substitute for educational preference.
  • Certified Transplant Preservationist (CTP), Certified Procurement Transplant Coordinator (CPTC), or Certified Tissue Banking Specialist (CTBS) certification in addition to required education preferred.

$24.05 - $26.72 an hour
