TITLE: Director of Practicum (Field) Education Office 
STATUS: Full-Time Exempt (Salaried)
DEPARTMENT: School of Social Work
REPORTS TO: Director, School of Social Work
WORK LOCATION: hybrid on campus and remote work schedule
About the Position
The Director of Practicum (formerly referred to as “Field”) Education will lead the Practicum Office in promoting an anti-oppressive and anti -racist approach to the internship experience for MSW students. The Director of Practicum will reinforce and
support the practicum experience as the signature pedagogy for social work education and develops, manages, supervises and coordinates internship experiences for students in SSW. The Director of Practicum Education will develop new affiliations, maintain relationships with community partners, evaluate current field placements and educate practicum instructors on their role in supporting social work education. The role of the Director of Practicum Education is to provide direct support and training to the practicum office, students, practicum faculty, placements, and practicum instructors/task supervisors. The Director of Practicum will lead and support the school’s strategic directives as they relate to the Practicum Office. The Director of Practicum reports to the Director of the School of Social Work.
Primary Responsibilities:
Programmatic
  • Support the implementation of the school’s strategic directives as it relates to the practicum experience
  • Outreach, engage, and coordinate with potential placement settings (including agencies, organizations, and schools) for the purpose of accepting social work interns which includes appropriate vetting and use of virtual and in-person site visits as needed.
  • Participate in the CSWE reaccreditation processes and evaluation of competencies for students.
  • Attend and participate in practicum related events such as CSWE’s Annual Program Meeting (APM)
  • Participation in Field Director Consortium of Illinois (meetings are bi-annual)
  • Engage in oversight of student worker responsibilities.
  • Take an active role in practicum programming, including: student orientation, supervisory orientation/training, faculty orientation, and Practicum Fair.
  • Educate community organizations as to the policies and procedures required by SSW and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) for successful internships.
  • Represent the university at community and university functions to promote understanding of the role of practicum in social work education.
  • Participate in SSW committees as such as Global and Curriculum committee, and others per School need.
Curricular
  • Teach one field seminar section per academic year (SWK 511 and SWK 551 or SWK 611 and 651) ( additional pay) and will serve as the course lead.
  • Participate in curriculum development such as updating course related content as the course lead for Field classes.
  • Update practicum website content and practicum manual.
  • Provide supervision and support to Assistant Directors of Practicum and adjunct practicum faculty.
Student Engagement
  • Oversee the practicum placement process of all students with support from the Assistant Director(s)
  • Meet with students individually for practicum readiness to educate on process and expectations, while also identifying needs and placement fit.
  • Maintain communication with students seeking and/or currently in practicum placement around placement processes and responding to student questions, issues and concerns that may come up during placement process and once in placement.
  • Collaborate with the CASS Assistant Dean in regard to the facilitation of Student Support Meeting
Supervision
  • Supervise Assistant Directors (s) of Practicum Education
  • Engage in oversight of student worker responsibilities.
MINIMUM/REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Candidates must have at minimum a master’s degree in social work with two years post-graduate experience in direct social work practice
  • Licensure as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW):
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 3-5 years post-graduate experience in direct social work practice, including program development and management,
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English.
  • Knowledge of the social service landscape in Chicago, suburban cook county and surrounding counties.
  • Previous experience as Practicum (Field) supervisor, liaison, or instructor
About the School of Social Work: The School offers a CSWE-accredited Master of Social Work and maintains a distinctive presence in Chicago and surrounding areas. The School prepares professional social workers for a globally focused, social justice-oriented practice through rigorous and relationship centered education. We offer our program at our main campus in River Forest, IL, at the University Center of Lake County in Grayslake, IL, and online. With 9 full-time staff and faculty and a group of experienced and committed part-time faculty, the School is well-positioned to meet the needs of the social work profession and provide access to the profession for students from historically excluded communities. We offer several tracks: military, gerontology, children, youth and families, health & wellbeing, school social work, and global work with immigrants and refugees as well as dual degrees with the Brennan School of Business, the School of Information Studies, and the Master of Arts in Conflict Resolution. We have received two HRSA federal grants to support students from underrepresented communities, and we have several ongoing curriculum initiatives that seek to develop a Latinx serving program, and one that prepares social workers to work with minoritized groups.
