The Advanced Technology Group (ATG) is the research division of the company. ATG’s mission is to look ahead, deliver insights, and innovate technological solutions that will fuel Dolby’s continued growth. Our researchers have a broad range of expertise related to computer science and electrical engineering, such as AI/ML, algorithms, digital signal processing, audio engineering, image processing, computer vision, data science & analytics, distributed systems, cloud, edge & mobile computing, computer networking, and IoT.

What is the Research Internship Program?

What are we looking for in candidates?

Along with your solid technical skills, candidates should demonstrate problem-solving and analytical abilities, good communication and collaboration skills, a curiosity for how and why things work as they do, and a passion for audio, video, movies, music, or game technology. You have a desire to bring in new ideas and are open to learning from others and working in a team.

Summary of Position:

For this internship position we are looking for postgraduate students to use game and realtime engines, such as Unity and Unreal

  • to rapidly prototype novel user experiences involving sound, sight, haptics, and even other senses.
  • as a platform for designing and implementing a range of experiments/experiences stimulating multiple senses and a range of methods for gathering feedback including the use of sensors such as eye-tracking, GSR, EEG

We aim to explore new vectors of interactivity, immersion, engagement, attention and multimodal perception for entertainment, education, training, and wellbeing.

We are looking for strong candidates with an interest in one or more of the following areas:

  • Game design –entertainment, educational/transformative, health
  • Game engine libraries implementing physics effects such as realistic rendering of audio and/or video signals.
  • Human sensing for entertainment, education and wellbeing applications (human computer interfaces, affective computing, physiological data measurement and analysis, etc.)
  • Multimodal perception (audio, video, haptics, etc)

Requirements:

  • Higher degree student working towards a master’s/Ph.D. degree in imaging, audio, haptics or other modality, game development, human computer interfaces, human perception, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, or related field.
  • Proven ability to use game engines, such as Unity or Unreal, as a platform for implementing experiments, prototyping new experiences, or developing novel training, wellbeing and entertainment experiences.
  • Experience as a researcher, including internships, full-time, or at a lab.
  • Experience with one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C/C , MATLAB, etc.).

Highly Desired Experience in one of the following:

  • Familiarity with physics-based scene rendering pipelines and libraries for video and audio.
  • Creating demos and prototypes for research applications.
  • Writing technical reports and/or publications.
  • First-author publications at peer-reviewed conferences or journals.

Eligibility

Currently enrolled in a graduate program in imaging, audio, haptics or other modality, game development, human computer interfaces, human perception, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, or related field. Must be available to work full-time Monday – Friday for 12 weeks between May/June 2024 – August/September 2024. 

The start dates for this internship are as follows (please note these dates are not flexible): 

  • May 20, 2024 or 

  • June 17, 2024 

The San Francisco/Bay Area base hourly range for this internship position is $44-57/hr and can vary if outside of this location. Our hourly ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific hourly range and perks and benefits for your location during the hiring process.
