Dodge City Community College is Hiring an Academic Coach/Learning Specialist Near Dodge, KS

Under the general supervision of the Director of the Student Achievement and Resources Center, the Academic Coach/Learning Specialist will provide academic assistance in conjunction with faculty, advisors, counselors, athletic coaches and tutors to promote academic achievement and graduation. This position will also carry a caseload of at-risk student athletes and develop and implement individualized academic support plans.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • To understand and commit to the Mission of the College ~ Dodge City Community College provides a student-centered learning environment where students can achieve their educational, personal, and career goals.
  • Assist the SARC Director in carrying out activities that support the mission of the SARC and the college.
  • Serve as a liaison between faculty and student/instructional support, including advisors, counselors, athletic coaches, and tutors to promote academic achievement.
  • Coordinate and monitor study halls.
  • Monitor students’ progress and maintain student records.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, supervisors, or other employees.
  • Focus on at-risk, low-income, culturally diverse, and first-generation students to promote good academic standing, retention, and degree completion through active participation in SARC services, including tutoring, academic coaching, and appropriate workshops.
  • Assess the needs of assigned students and develop strategies and appropriate study plans.
  • Update and consult the SARC Director with student’s progress and make other academic referrals for students to other appropriate college resources (e.g., counselors).
  • Assist students during study hall by providing proactive, early, sustained, individualized support to enhance student success and to develop independent learners.
  • Maintain appropriate records of tutoring sessions and scheduling appointments in the electronic database according to SARC practices.
  • Teach study strategies courses/workshops and other support courses as needed
  • Stay current with trends and best practices regarding student retention, develop retention strategies for the college, and work closely with faculty, student services staff, and other DC3 staff in implementing, evaluating, and improving retention strategies.
  • Cooperate with SARC Director on the development, piloting, and implementation of training programs designed to assist peer tutors.
  • Some evening and one Sunday per semester prior finals week required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team.
  • Excellent organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Must maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • Bilingual skills.
  • Minimum of one year of experience related to the above-described duties.

  • None.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to hear informational speaker in conversational voice.
  • Ability to speak clearly and audibly to individuals in person and on the telephone.
  • Able to bend, reach and stoop to perform job functions.
  • Ability to stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time for presentations.
  • Ability to access classroom, office, and other school locations.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 lbs. of materials and supplies.
