BASE SITE: Harrisville (Alcona County)

GRADE: 8 or 8a

RATE OF PAY: Grade 8 Starting $22.89/hour

Grade 8a Starting $24.68/hour

General Summary

Under the supervision of the Environmental Health Director, is seeking an Environmental Health Sanitarian to enforce environmental health and water protection regulations and provide education and consultative services to safeguard public health. This position utilizes a high degree of autonomy to review requests from the public and schools for permits, licenses, and rights to operate certain businesses, to conform with local, state, and federal codes, laws, and regulations pertaining to public wells and septic safety.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct onsite evaluations to assess soil and site conditions relative to onsite sewage disposal.
  • Issues permits for sewage disposal systems and onsite water supplies and conducts inspections to assure compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Conducts onsite sanitary surveys and issues construction permits for Type II public water supplies.
  • Investigates complaints and alleged violations of environmental health law and regulations.
  • Travel to evaluate and or inspect campgrounds, public pools, septage trucks and temporary food service establishments.
  • Prepares letters, reports, and correspondence pertaining to activities.
  • Collects samples from surface water and drinking water sources for analysis as appropriate.
  • Assists the public in the field, office, or by telephone with questions, comments, or complaints on related program matters.
  • Enters and retrieves data and reports various computer databases and software programs.
  • Ability to respond to public health threats and work with Emergency Preparedness Team.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards, State and Local Sanitary Codes.
  • Other related environmental health duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree in environmental health or related field and one-year minimum related experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Ability to provide services to vulnerable populations in a culturally competent and non-judgmental manner.

· Computer competency skills, especially in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Possession of Registration as a Sanitarian in Michigan or Registered Environmental Health Sanitarian from NEHA, for Grade 8a position preferred, however, will consider a commitment to take the Registered Sanitarian exam when eligible but will enter as a Grade 8 position.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Michigan driver’s license: or the ability to have personal transportation provided.

· Ability to effectively communicate or relate with staff and the public in a professional capacity and provide service in a culturally competent manner.
