Discovery Preschool and Family Center is Hiring a Floating Substitute Early Childhood Educator Near Santa Cruz, CA

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision provide developmental care and supervision to children enrolled at Discovery, establish and maintain supportive relationships with co-workers, children and parents; and perform related work as required.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Examples of key duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature.

1. Nurture the development of each child's self-esteem, trust, and growing autonomy. Provide continuous supervision to children enrolled; ensure health and safety of children.

2. Assist classroom educator(s) in preparing materials that are relevant to the children's interests and culture. Curriculum is hands-on and play-based.

3. Help young children with clothing, grooming, health habits, and bathroom activities.

4. Respond quickly to children's different and personal needs (verbal and non-verbal cues), temperament styles, abilities, and cultures.

5. Assist classroom educator(s) in performing a daily health check for every child upon morning drop off.

5. Assist classroom educator(s) in maintaining classrooms, kitchen, and play areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition; sets up rooms and areas for various activities such as lunch, naps, games, etc.

6. Observe student behavior and learning, communicating observations regularly with the teacher.

7. Assist the teacher with clerical work, record keeping, and other non-instructional tasks as assigned.

8. Accompany and assist the teacher in supervision on approved nature walks.

9. Immediately communicate to the teacher any unusual situations or needs of students.

10. Assist the teacher in handling interruptions and emergencies.

11. Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 completed ECE/CD units in early childhood education or child development -or- enrolled in ECE/CD course and proof of completion of at least 2 units in ECE/CD each semester following initial employment. Continuation in the education program each semester until 6 units have been completed.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 12 completed ECE/CD units including courses that cover child growth and development, child and family, and program/curriculum.
  • Minimum six (6) months recent paid successful experience as a preschool or infant/toddler teacher or caregiver in a licensed childcare center.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Early childhood development and appropriate practices for toddlers, preschoolers and/or young children; nurturing, caregiving and education of young children; collaborative team and parent communication.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to: lifting children or heavy items (up to 50 lbs. unassisted), bending, standing, climbing or walking. Must be able to work safely in an environment containing biological conditions, which may be unhealthful or hazardous (such as bodily fluids and waste, germs, childhood diseases). Must pass fingerprint clearance test for all appropriate agencies (such as FBI, Department of Justice, and Child Abuse Index Services). Implement a program based on sound principles of child development; interact positively with children and act as an appropriate adult role model; meet Title 5 and Title XXII regulations; enforce and apply all laws, rules and regulations; read, understand and interpret standard official legal documents; communicate effectively in English; give and follow written and oral instructions; exercise judgment and discretion in analyzing and resolving problems; maintain accurate and detailed records; maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrate sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse population.

SCHEDULE: Monday and Tuesday 8:00AM-12:00PM, Wednesday and Thursday 8:00AM-2:00PM, Friday 8:00AM-11:00AM

SUPERVISION: Will work under the direct supervision of the Director and Classroom Educators.

COMPENSATION: Depends on experience; starting at $24/hour
