General Summary:

Support the daily operations of the Department by performing maintenance and repair tasks for the museum building, grounds, and exhibit experiences to ensure safe, welcoming, and functional guest experience across all Discovery Place, Inc. locations. Further responsibilities are to support new initiatives such as temporary exhibitions and capital projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Open, close, and secure facilities on daily basis.
  • Start and shut down exhibit components on daily basis.
  • Perform daily interior/exterior inspections of facilities and exhibits while immediately addressing issues related to aesthetics, functionality, and safety.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and performance inspections for all applicable assets.
  • Execute Work Orders provided by Facilities Manager daily.
  • Assemble and maintain exhibits and exhibit elements by performing regular maintenance and repairs for all exhibit, building and grounds.
  • Troubleshoots repairs and provides practical insight to Management regarding facilities and exhibit performance and methods for improvement.
  • Monitor daily custodial services and directs custodial staff for any cleaning related needs or requests.
  • Immediately reports any major Building system issues. Supports with triage efforts, as necessary.
  • Work with other departments to ensure that all back-of-house and storage areas are neat, orderly, and clean to meet museum standards.
  • Setup and breakdown equipment for company sponsored events and provide logistical support if needed.
  • Assist with movement, relocation, or disposal of equipment, furniture, or fixtures.
  • Responsible for receiving, documenting, securing, and delivering packages received from all couriers (USPS, FedEx, UPS, freight, etc.)
  • Ensure proper delivery of parking deck pay station note safe and reports on a weekly basis.
  • Execute and enforce safety/security procedures by taking appropriate action prior to, during, and after emergency situations occur.
  • Purchase and maintain stock materials, spare parts, and consumable items.
  • Fabricate exhibit elements and replacement parts from plastics, metal, and wood as directed by management.
  • Maintain shop areas in a clean and working condition.
  • Communicate with other DPI team members and departments to resolve issues.
  • Interpret drawings and instructions and use them to troubleshoot facilities and exhibits-related issues.
  • Maintain information on vendors and inventory.
  • Participate in all applicable exhibit installs and strikes.
  • Ensure all products meet DPIs highest level of quality.

Qualifications


Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to calculate figures and apply basic mathematic concepts.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Microsoft Outlook, word processing, and spreadsheet software
  • Experience with diagnosing and troubleshooting/repairing electronic components.
  • Basic computer diagnostic, troubleshooting and repair skills.
  • Basic woodworking fabrication skills.
  • Basic building systems knowledge and skills (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, etc.).
  • Experience with metals, plastics, and CNC operation is desired but not required.

Competency:

Technical Skills Experience in exhibit maintenance and production. Proficient with all types of power tools. Familiarity with heavy equipment [forklift and scissor lift]. Willingness to experiment with new materials and production methods.

Assume additional responsibilities as assumed/ assigned or directed by Manager, Exhibit Experience.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily a fabrication shop environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts and equipment.
  • Frequently required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders, lift, and operate motorized equipment.
  • Indoor and outdoor exposure.
  • Must have a valid NC or SC drivers license.
  • Travel to other museum locations.

Physical Demands:

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Visual accuracy
  • Expert manual dexterity
