We are looking for a confident, independent hard working person for the Deputy National Communications Director for Outreach and Media. This person would responsible for assisting in the oversight, development and implementation of communication strategies aimed at building government and public support and awareness of veterans’ issues in accordance with the National Organization’s Strategic Plan. The Deputy Director of Communications for Outreach and Media will also work closely with the Communications Director and Deputy Director as a communications partner on a variety of strategic initiatives, projects, and programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist the editorial team that produces DAV Magazine
  • Coordinate the activities and provide direct staff supervision of the outreach and media relations team members at National Headquarters and National Service and Legislative Headquarters to build and maintain DAV’s reputation, with particular emphasis on strategic communications.
  • Assist in developing annual budgets associated with carrying out comprehensive media relations and public communications programs.
  • Coordinate and manage all agency support of DAV outreach initiatives.
  • Coordinate and manage best practices for social media and video outreach.
  • Coordinate content and ensure adherence to acceptable editorial standards for DAV Magazine, DAV News Service, and other publications produced by the national organization in carrying out its mission.
  • Aid in developing comprehensive public relations strategies for the national organization, coordinating implementation by the National Communications staff.
  • Research, write, and edit editorial, feature, and news articles for DAV Magazine and DAV News Service.
  • Research and write feature articles and editorial commentary pieces, develop public outreach and advertisements and coordinate placement in external media.
  • Perform or assign public relations and media relations tasks, including disseminating information and responding to media and public inquiries regarding DAV public policy issues and program services.
  • Perform speech-writing tasks for national officers and staff representing the national organization.
  • Other tasks and duties, as assigned.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or equivalent work experience.
  • Thorough understanding of DAV’s Constitution, Bylaws, Regulations, and Mission.
  • Thorough understanding of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Thorough understanding of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Thorough understanding and experience establishing long-range objectives and specifying the strategies and actions to achieve them.
  • Thorough understanding of complaint handling, settling disputes, and resolving grievances and conflicts, or otherwise negotiating with others.
  • Functional user of standard business computer, Microsoft Office software suite, and various communications software.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and leadership skills are required.
  • A valid motor vehicle driver’s license (other than motorcycle) is required.

Degree of Supervision:

  • Employee appraisals/counseling is provided no less than annually.
  • Strategic goal attainment is reviewed annually based on quantifiable strategic business plans and budget results.
  • Ultimately position is responsible for all activities of Communications Department, up to 5 direct-reports.
  • Annual Reports are available to oversight agencies and public.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $105,000.00 per year
