Description

Role: The Staff Accountant will oversee and maintain financial records to track the organization’s assets, liabilities, profit and loss, tax liabilities, and other related financial activities. This position requires a professional with a strong educational background in accounting and relevant experience in not-for-profit financial management.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic financial leadership to support the organization’s mission and goals.
  • Perform general cost accounting and other related duties for the organization.
  • Establish internal controls and guidelines for accounting transactions and budget preparation.
  • Ensure accurate recording of financial transactions and adherence to accounting principles.
  • Prepare balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements.
  • Maintain and updates general ledger accounts.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state and federal requirements, to include routine reporting requirements.
  • Address inquiries from banks.
  • Reconcile cash disbursement accounts, payroll, and customer accounts.
  • Provide outside auditors with assistance. Gather necessary account information and documents to perform annual financial audit, 401(k) audit and workers compensation audit.
  • Generate business activity reports, budgets and financial reports for internal departments and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee Kansas Department of Transportation accounting processes, including budgeting, reporting and compliance.
  • Supervise office staff who are responsible for financial reporting, billing, collections, and payroll.
  • Coordinate with software vendor to maintain accounting software systems. Recommend updates to enhance the accounting software.
  • Maintain knowledge of acceptable accounting practices and procedures, and an on-going understanding of the funding structure of the HCBS/IDD Waiver System.
  • Ensure accuracy of data in Human Resources Information System, working collaboratively with Human Resources.
  • Prepare and submits payroll. Provide payroll reporting as requested.
  • Liaison with third party Information Technology vendor.
  • Abide by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability privacy and security regulations regarding all aspects of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Teams as well as Quickbooks accounting software.

Qualifications


Knowledge and Skills:

Experience: Related experience of 2 or more years, preferably with focus on not-for-profit financial management. Certified Public Account designation preferred.

Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration required.

Interpersonal Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel and individuals served. Must demonstrate compassion for individuals with disabilities

Physical/Environmental: Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift at least 15 pounds.
