English Teacher FLSA Status: ExemptReports To: Building PrincipalSupervises: Assigned Paraprofessional, if applicableEmployment Terms: 10-Month Full-time Position (200 Contacted Days)Grade: Teacher ScalePosition SummaryUnder direction of the school principal, plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provide an atmosphere and an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community. Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintain appropriate records and follow required procedures and practices. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.Qualification RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.Essential FunctionsMeets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.Plans a program of study that is appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students and meets the individual needs and abilities of the students.Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate superior.Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals established by the Virginia Standards of Learning, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students.Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.Strives to implement by instruction and action the division’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.Utilizes assessment data to plan and improve instruction.Observes the individual learning style and progress of each student and seeks the assistance of division specialist(s) if learning problems are suspected.Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, division policy, and administrative regulation.Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and for the classroom.Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aides(s), volunteer(s) and substitute teachers, as well as, evaluates their job performance cooperatively with department heads as required.Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.Attend staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.Performs any other related duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator. Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesThorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all facets of assigned school.Thorough knowledge of prescribed School Board policies and procedures.Skill in the use of personal computers and related software packages, hardware and peripheral equipment.Must have the ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively in both oral and written formats.Ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board, elected officials, parents, students and the general public. Qualifications, Education and ExperienceHold a valid Virginia Department of Education teacher’s license or certification with appropriate endorsement in subject areas for which employed; orHas completed the requirements for a Virginia certificate or license and has filed an application for same; orWill qualify for a Virginia certificate or license prior to the effective date of employment.Prior teaching experience and/or student teaching is strongly preferred.Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board may find appropriate and acceptable. Physical RequirementsThis work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires pushing or pulling.Work has standard vision requirements.Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly.Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.Must be mobile enough to monitor students in all instructional settings (in school and on school grounds).Work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Special RequirementsPossession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s) and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia or School Board. May require the ability to acquire a valid driver’s license to operate division-owned/leased motor vehicles. The incumbent’s driving record will be subject to periodic review, and must be acceptable in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.All candidates must successfully undergo the following pre-employment screenings:Tuberculosis ScreeningChild Protective Services (CPS) InvestigationState Police Criminal History InvestigationFederal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)/National Criminal History Investigative Search EvaluationPerformance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Dinwiddie County School Board’s policy manual.
