The first non-profit outpatient mental health clinic in Los Angeles County, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services was founded in 1942 to help women cope with the effects of the Great Depression. Over the years, we have evolved in response to the needs of our increasingly complex community. Through the leadership and generosity of Didi and I. Kingdon Hirsch, we became one of the first federally approved community mental health centers in greater Los Angeles in 1974. With this designation came a commitment to offer community education, clinic-based treatment and residential care to people of all ag...es. We subsequently were renamed to honor Didi Hirschs leadership in this expansion. Today, Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services helps nearly 160,000 children and adults each year. Dedicated to serving communities where poverty or stigma limits access, Didi Hirsch provides mental health, substance use and suicide prevention services from 10 centers and over 100 schools throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. A global resource for healing and hope, Didi Hirschs Suicide Prevention Center provides crisis services for people thinking about suicide and their loved ones, training, education, therapy and support groups for people who have survived an attempt or are bereaved by a loss. We offer a wide range of services Adult Services, Child and Family Services, Substance Abuse Services, Suicide Prevention and Training. Services include crisis intervention and stabilization, counseling, residential treatment, case management, youth-at-risk and family reinforcement programs, delinquency prevention programs, substance abuse treatment and prevention, and extensive community outreach. As a key member of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline network, our Crisis Line took over 130,000 calls, chats and texts nationwide in 2019, including 80% of the Lifeline calls in California.
