Detroit Zoological Society is Hiring a Science Engagement Team Member Near Royal, MI

Science Engagement Team Member
The Science Engagement Team is a temporary, grant-funded position created to deliver high-quality programming in afterschool settings. This position will support high school students in enhancing their science literacy and communication skills and assist them as they engage Zoo guests with hands-on activities.
This is a two-year position. Candidates will work 12 hours per week, 30 weeks each calendar year.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilitate programming that reflects best practices in the education field, including inquiry-based and project-based learning experiences.
  • Engage program participants in building a conceptual understanding of science concepts.
  • Actively engage with colleagues to support departmental goals and objectives.
  • Supervise participants effectively in various environments, including classrooms, at the Detroit Zoo, and during field experiences.
  • Promote the DZS’s mission of celebrating and saving wildlife and wild places.
  • Actively participate in, and share professional development opportunities (including onsite workshops, webinars, offsite conferences, etc.).
Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • Associate's degree in general science, education, zoology, biology or other closely related field OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience in an informal or formal learning institution.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiar with youth developmental stages and best pedagogical practices to meet those needs.
  • Ability to use audio-visual equipment.
  • Skilled in short video creation and editing processes and software.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize various software programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to operate various size/styled motor vehicles.
  • Requires valid Michigan Driver’s License.
Preferred
  • General knowledge of current state and national curriculum standards.
  • Teaching certification and/or experience in a formal/informal learning environment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors in an office environment, at local high schools, and frequently outdoors, with exposure to all seasonal weather conditions. Work will be performed onsite and offsite as required. Frequent travel throughout SE Michigan with the possibility of regional travel.
Physical Requirements
Able to perform the essential functions of the role with or without reasonable accommodations, visual acuity sufficient to read standard text, often on video display monitors, standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 20 lbs and sitting for extended periods.
