Pest Control Technician
The Pest Control Technician develops and implements the pest management program at the Detroit Zoo, Belle Isle Nature Center and SSA facilities to ensure safe environments for animals, staff, and guests.
The Pest Control Technician will support, both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society. The Pest Control Technician will maintain a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies and always preserve a high level of confidentiality.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Design, implement, maintain, and evaluate preventive pest control program through both chemical product and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approaches.
Maintain communication with zoo staff regarding current and emerging pest control situations, ongoing and proposed treatments, and coordinate pest control activities.
Develop and manage budget for chemicals and other pest control management supplies.
Order, store, and inventory pest control chemicals and supplies.
Safely dispose of waste and expired supplies.
Place, bait, monitor and maintain live-traps throughout the Detroit Zoo, Belle Isle Nature Center and SSA facilities as needed.
Transport live-trapped animals from capture site to Animal Health Complex or other location as needed.
Regularly inspect all areas of the zoological institute for pest problems and record problem areas.
Monitor perimeter fencing for areas providing access to native mammals.
Identify areas harboring pests and work toward resolution by working cooperatively with other departments as needed.
Write work orders for necessary work.
Work directly to resolve problems by clearing debris, dispersing standing water, plugging holes, setting traps, monitoring traps, etc.
Maintain records of chemical treatment, live-trapping and other integrated pest management activities.
Undergo regular training and maintenance of licensure in cooperation with local, state, and federal regulations.
Provide regular reports outlining goals, progress and areas of challenge.
Assist in preparation and presentation of training programs for zoo staff, volunteers and other groups as needed.
Conduct educational presentations in both formal and informal settings.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in an a related field.
One year of experience working with organizational pest control.
Must possess and maintain a state of Michigan Pest Control Applicator’s license.
Must possess a valid state of Michigan Driver’s License.
Working Conditions Work is performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to all seasonal weather conditions, with occasional exposure to dangerous animals, with risk of zoonotic disease transmission (Hepatitis B, Herpes B, Tuberculosis, Salmonella, Rabies and others), and with exposure to computer monitors. Weekend and evening will be required as necessary. Physical Requirements This position requires sitting, standing, walking, bending, and stooping for extended periods, lifting and moving up to 50 pounds.
