Detroit Zoological Society is Hiring a Community Outreach and Research Associate Near Royal, MI

Community Outreach and Research Associate
Detroit Zoological Society (DZS), in collaboration with AmeriCorps and Antioch University, is looking for TWO (2) full-time Community Outreach & Research Associates to assist with an exciting, hands-on community-based research project that commences later in 2024! Positions will help build upon the capacity of target cities in Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties by assisting DZS staff with outreach, coordination and relationship building to co-create conservation programming with the community.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • In conjunction with DZS staff….
    • Help co-coordinate methods the DZS will employ to engage residents in target neighborhoods.
    • Build relationships with community leaders, organizations, businesses and schools from target neighborhoods.
    • Disseminate project information and address related questions and concerns from the communities in target neighborhoods.
    • Coordinate logistics and planning of DZS-led community meetings with community organizations and leaders.
    • Assist the DZS Antioch Core team in developing all external-facing materials for community engagement projects.
    • Assist with preparing presentations and informational documents for community outreach activities.
    • Assist with information collection during focus group community meetings, including notes on community input, observations, etc.
    • Attend regular project and team meetings with DZS staff to develop a Professional Development Action plan and other staff development training.
    • Attend DZS orientation and professional development to represent DZS positively in the community.
    • Follow policies and procedures in place for DZS employees at work and all community engagement events.
    • Participate in and complete all required training offered by AmeriCorps/Antioch and DZS as it relates to the program.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Have a passion for working with diverse teams of DZS staff and target neighborhood residents.
  • The ability to speak with organizations and community leaders at meetings through video conferencing, email, and phone.
  • Be proficient in MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Google Drive (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides) for data collection and reporting purposes.
  • The ability to work in teams and independently as needed.
Desired experience:
  • Reside in one of the target neighborhoods (Districts 4 and 6 in Detroit, Hazel Park, Royal Oak Township, and Oak Park)
  • Some experience with community engagement, community organizing, educational programming, communications, or facilitation
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking
  • Fluency in Spanish and Arabic is a plus.
  • Preference will be given to those familiar with target neighborhoods in the metro Detroit area and with education program development experience.
Work environment:
  • The DZS will provide uniform shirts, partial cell phone allowance, and a laptop computer to use for business during the course of employment.
  • Your physical presence will be required on-site at the DZS every day, often from morning until evening, 32 hours a week.
  • Hours will be adjusted as needed to meet the community engagement goals. Evening and weekend hours for community engagement events will be common.
  • This role’s anticipated end date is 12 months from the start date
Compensation:
  • A modest annual stipend of $22,882 is provided as part of the contract and will be issued in bi-weekly payments
