Who We Are

New Paradigm For Education (NPFE) is a non-profit Charter Management Organization (CMO) composed of educational practitioners, community advocates, and business leaders who have dedicated years of service to children. NPFE serves 2,100 students in Detroit, Michigan. We specialize in maximizing student learning potential through proven education practices and managing all phases of school design, planning, and program implementation. 

New Paradigm College Prep (NPCP) is a PreK-8 NPFE campus committed to creating an environment that yields excellent academic results for all students. NPCP is a beautifully multicultural school with 60 percent Latinx students and 40 percent African American students, and student enrollment of about 200. NPCP provides a rigorous curriculum with a focus on diversity and collaboration with both families and the community in a safe and respectful place for students, staff, families, and community. 

As with all NPFE campuses, we provide an evidence-based curriculum, after-school enrichment, sports & extracurriculars, and specialized support like tutoring and character building.

New Paradigm for Education is looking for a School Social Worker with experience working with school-age children and a diverse community. The ideal candidate should be able to collaborate with students, teachers, parents, and staff to develop inclusive and creative solutions for individual, group, and school-wide behavior and performance challenges.

What You’ll Do

The school social worker will support students and advocate for their emotional, mental, and physical well-being. They will assist in addressing the psychological needs and social well-being of our students. The school social worker's responsibilities include providing information to students, parents, and school staff, counseling students, and addressing relevant issues. They will work with students in one-on-one, classroom, or school-wide sessions. To be a successful school social worker, one should be dedicated to assisting students, compassionate, and caring. They should also be knowledgeable about outside services, such as shelters, food banks, and medical care.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in social work

  • License to practice school social work in Michigan 

  • Prior classroom experience working with school-age children

  • Experience using culturally affirming practices, working with diverse communities, and strong relationship-building skills to understand students, families, and communities.

  • Background in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, charter education, or counseling preferred 

  • Experience working in diverse settings, including with Latinx students and/or English Language Learners preferred
  • A growth mindset and collaborative approach to meeting students needs

Duties & Responsibilities

Support and Services

  • Proactively develop social-emotional educational programs to meet student needs.

  • Providing counseling sessions, treatment plans, or workshops as necessary and establishing prevention programs and intervention plans.

  • Communicating with students and parents to determine the areas in which they may need assistance or counseling.

  • Assisting teachers and school staff with behavioral and attitude issues by communicating with students to find the causes of their distress.

  • Providing information, when appropriate, to outside support services to help students with economic, emotional, or physical issues.

  • Assisting at-risk students or students with disabilities.

  • Communicating with parents, teachers, and administrators to understand students' challenges.

  • Maintaining case files and reports to track students' progress and problems.

  • Helping students and families connect to resources to address various needs.

  • Maintain progress records for all support services provided by the school.
